Haut Et Court has acquired distribution rights in France for the forthcoming historical film “The Captive,” helmed by Alejandro Amenábar, who is famously recognized for “The Others” and the Academy Award-winning “The Sea Inside.
The movie that was filmed last year across Valencia, Alicante, and Seville in Spain for a budget of $15 million, is currently undergoing post-production. Film Constellation is responsible for global distribution of this film, while Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures will be the one releasing it in Spain.
As a dedicated cinephile, I’d put it this way: “In the heart of my latest movie, we delve into the captivating tale of Miguel de Cervantes, the brilliant mind behind ‘Don Quixote.’ At age 28, I find myself in the gripping storyline where he is captured by the Moors in Algiers.
1575 finds us in Algiers, where a wounded Spanish soldier named De Cervantes is being held captive by Ottoman pirates. If his fellow countrymen don’t pay his ransom soon, a grim fate awaits him. However, within the walls of his cell, an unexpected sanctuary emerges for Cervantes – the craft of storytelling.
Intriguing tales held captivated not just his fellow prisoners but also Hasan, the mysterious and formidable ruler of Algiers, sparking a clandestine bond between jailor and jailed. Whispers of mistrust swirled as tension simmered within the city, yet Cervantes, fueled by unshakeable hope, crafted a bold strategy to secure his release.
For the second occasion, Haut et Court is set to distribute a movie by Amenábar, having previously worked together on the 2019 war drama “While at War,” known in France as “Lettre à Franco.
Haut Et Court expressed excitement about the upcoming movie: “We’re thrilled after reading an impactful script and catching a glimpse of stunning early visuals. We can’t wait to see the final product. Alejandro’s unique take on the youth of Cervantes, a renowned literary figure, promises to breathe new life into the story in a way that feels relevant today. With its broad appeal, talented cast, and Alejandro’s exceptional skill, this film is destined to captivate viewers.
In the upcoming film, Julio Peña (“Berlin,” “Through My Window”) will be joined by Alessandro Borghi (“The Eight Mountains,” “Supersex”), with Alex Catalán (“Loving Pablo,” “While at War”) handling the cinematography, Juan Pedro de Gaspar (“Even the Rain,” “The Queen of Spain”) overseeing production design, Nicoletta Taranta (“A Chiara,” “Rose Island”) managing costume design, Carolina Martínez (“La Fortuna”) taking care of editing, Ana Rubio (“The Beasts,” “Elite”) working on visual effects, and Amenábar responsible for the music.
The movie is made by Fernando Bovaira from Mod Producciones (known for “The Others,” “The Summit,” “While at War,” “Biutiful”), Himenóptero (“Regression,” “The Sea Inside”) and Misent Producciones, in collaboration with Propaganda Italia (“Monica,” “Piove”). Netflix, RTVE, RAI Cinema also contribute to its production. The project receives support from ICAA, Generalitat Valenciana, and Eurimages.
