Harry Potter’s Oliver Phelps Recalls Which Set Smelled Like “Socks”

James and Oliver Phelps, who famously played the Weasley twins in the Harry Potter films, have many great memories from their time on set. However, one magical location wasn’t so magical when it came to its strange smell.

Oliver explained that filming scenes in the Great Hall, packed with extras, created a surprising sensory experience. “Even when I watch those scenes now, I can still smell things like roasting vegetables or oil – and it’s not a pleasant smell!” he told People magazine while promoting the second season of Harry Potter: Wizards of Baking.

They were getting turkeys to prepare for celebrations and events. But when I think about what bothered me most, it was just the smell of dirty socks.

Oliver and James don’t have fond memories of the food smells on the set, but they still cherish their time in the Great Hall, even when they weren’t filming. They remember that when they didn’t have scenes to shoot in the large room—the setting for famous moments like the Sorting Ceremony and the Yule Ball—they’d often play soccer there.

Oliver reminisced, “You never forget those moments—the emotions, the people around you, even the way a place smelled. It’s amazing how it all stays with you. Even after all this time, the Great Hall still feels magical, though it smells much nicer now.”

Oliver and James are back to host the second season of Harry Potter: Wizards of Baking, which started on November 2nd. The show features eight teams of talented bakers and pastry chefs creating amazing and tasty edible masterpieces inspired by iconic moments and themes from the popular Harry Potter films.

James and Oliver Phelps, best known as Fred and George Weasley from the Harry Potter films, host this enchanting series. They share fun stories from behind the scenes and are joined by judges Carla Hall and Jozef Youssef, along with other beloved actors from the Harry Potter franchise.

While co-hosting, the brothers picked up some essential baking skills. Oliver learned the proper way to crack an egg without getting shells in the batter, and James shared with People magazine that the show frequently reminded him to remember the joy of cooking.

You know, as a movie fan, I always say that half the fun is discovering new things while you’re making something. If people are genuinely enjoying the process, even when things get really intense, that’s when the magic happens – anyone can get lost in the moment and have a blast.

You can watch Harry Potter: Wizards of Baking on Food Network on Sunday evenings, and it will be available to stream on HBO Max or discovery+ the following day.
