‘Harry Potter’ Series Debuts First Look Image, Trailer Tomorrow

Are you ready for Harry Potter to take over the pop culture universe all over again?

To be honest, I’m not prepared for this, but it’s coming regardless. HBO has given fans a first look at their new Harry Potter TV series by releasing a picture of Dominic McLaughlin as Harry, fully dressed in his Quidditch uniform. I wonder if we should call it a ‘kit’ – it certainly looks like one!

I saw a post today with just the word “Tomorrow” and a lightning bolt emoji. It’s clearly a signal that we’re getting a first look at something new really soon – a teaser, probably! I’m already excited to see what it is.

Alongside the casting of McLaughlin as Harry, Arabella Stanton will play Hermione Granger, and Alastair Stout will be Ron Weasley. The adult cast features John Lithgow as Professor Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Professor McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu as Snape, and Nick Frost as the beloved Hagrid, Hogwarts’ groundskeeper.

As a huge Harry Potter fan, I’m really excited about the new series! It’s going to tackle each book one season at a time, with Francesca Gardiner leading the charge. Season one will cover Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone in eight episodes. Everyone’s already talking about how it’ll compare to the movies, but I think this show has a real advantage. The films, understandably, had to leave a lot out, but the series seems determined to be more faithful to the source material. They’ve even hinted that some characters who didn’t make it into the movies will be appearing, which is fantastic news!

So, they dropped a little teaser this week, which is awesome, but don’t get too excited thinking you can binge it right away. From what I’m hearing, we’re looking at a 2027 release on HBO and HBO Max. It’s a bit of a wait, but hopefully it’ll be worth it!

The Scariest Kids Movies in History

10. Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory

This popular movie is based on Roald Dahl’s classic children’s book, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. It’s a sweet story about a poor boy who gets the chance of a lifetime. However, it also has a surprisingly dark side, focusing on a strange candy maker who chooses his successor by eliminating children along the way. It’s not quite as innocent as you might remember!

9. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs

Walt Disney’s Snow White didn’t hold back on the scary parts. From the frightening forest scenes to the truly menacing Evil Queen – who wanted to steal the heart of a kind young girl – it was a surprisingly dark film. Thankfully, the cheerful Seven Dwarfs provided some much-needed lightheartedness.

8. The Last Unicorn

The 1982 animated film The Last Unicorn is known for its strange scenes – think a butterfly that seems a little too relaxed, a scary skeleton, and, well, a rather noticeable tree. But the most frightening creature in the movie is definitely the Red Bull, a fiery red demon that many viewers still remember with a shudder.

7. James and the Giant Peach

Roald Dahl’s James and the Giant Peach was surprisingly spooky for a children’s book, featuring creatures like talking centipedes and spiders, plus a truly nasty step-aunt! The dark and quirky animation style of Tim Burton and Henry Selick made the story even more unsettling for young viewers. Does anyone else suddenly feel a little hesitant about eating peaches?

6. Pinocchio

Despite its sweet appearance, the Disney classic Pinocchio contains some surprisingly dark themes. The story includes a genuinely frightening moment where Pinocchio dies and has to be brought back to life. Even more disturbing is Pleasure Island, a place where children indulge in harmful behaviors and are ultimately transformed into donkeys to be sold into slavery. It’s a really unsettling concept hidden within a children’s movie.

5. All Dogs Go To Heaven

While many stories imagine dogs going to heaven, this movie uniquely depicts a dog facing the consequences of its actions in hell. It’s a surprisingly dark film, featuring a dog-related crime scheme and plenty of intense scenes. Ultimately, the hero dog, Charlie, bravely saves a young girl, but tragically dies in the process. Though his selfless act earns him a place in heaven, the film still centers around his death, leaving viewers to question whether it’s truly a happy ending and potentially sparking some tough questions for young viewers.

4. The Secret of NIMH

The 1982 animated film, The Secret of NIMH, features rats struggling with illness and the effects of medication. Surprisingly, the story was inspired by actual experiments done on lab rats by the National Institute of Mental Health in the mid-1900s. It makes you wonder how this was ever intended for children!

3. Watership Down

Okay, so I just finished watching Watership Down, and wow. Based on the classic novel, it’s about a group of rabbits trying to find a new home after their warren is threatened. But honestly, be warned – this isn’t your fluffy, cuddly bunny movie. It’s surprisingly intense and, frankly, quite violent. I’m pretty sure my idea of what’s ‘cute’ has been permanently altered. Prepare for some seriously unsettling imagery and a very different take on rabbits than you’re probably used to!

2. Return to Oz

While The Wizard of Oz had a few scary parts, its sequel, Return to Oz, was genuinely frightening. The movie starts with Dorothy undergoing electroshock therapy and then returning to Oz, which has become a ruined and unsettling place filled with disturbing new creatures. The Wheelers – characters who have wheels instead of legs – are far more menacing than the Flying Monkeys. If you saw this as a child, you probably found it really scary, and you weren’t alone!

1. Coraline

Coraline is possibly the scariest movie made for kids so far. From the very beginning, it presents a gloomy look at Coraline’s life, building to a truly frightening confrontation with the Other Mother. The film is visually stunning but deeply unsettling for viewers of all ages. It tackles complex themes like family and gratitude, reminding us to cherish what we have. That’s a lot to handle in a movie about an 11-year-old girl with bright blue hair!
