In a reflective chat with GQ magazine, Ridley Scott shared an interesting tidbit about the production of “Blade Runner.” It seems that the financial backers had doubts about casting Harrison Ford in the main role, as he was already known for his roles as Han Solo in “Star Wars” and Indiana Jones in “Raiders of the Lost Ark,” directed by Steven Spielberg. However, it appears that these financiers were overlooking some key aspects of Ford’s talent.
Scott mentioned that Harrison Ford was not yet a famous actor; he had just completed piloting the Millennium Falcon in ‘Star Wars.’ Scott recalled his investors questioning, ‘Who is Harrison Ford?’ To which Scott replied, ‘You’ll soon find out.’ As it turned out, Harry became my main actor.
During post-production of “Raiders of the Lost Ark”, Spielberg approved Ford for the role in “Blade Runner” when Scott inquired about casting the actor. Ford was eager to collaborate with Scott on this project because it presented a more serious character than Han Solo or Indiana Jones, which he found appealing. Similarly, the depth and drama of “Blade Runner” attracted Scott as well.

The director shared that on “Blade Runner,” they were creating an entirely new universe. They collaborated with writer Hampton Fancher for five months, who had previously adapted the novel “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?” into a play. After reading the book, the director found it to be overly intricate with around 90 potential stories in the first 20 pages. They admired the dialogue within the apartment setting Hampton created, but yearned to explore what transpired when he stepped outside.
Originally, “Blade Runner” wasn’t warmly received by critics or audiences. However, it eventually found its footing over time. Even today, Scott recalls the harsh criticism he received from Pauline Kael in The New Yorker. She stated that the film had nothing to offer viewers and jokingly suggested that if a test were to be devised to identify humanoids, perhaps Ridley Scott and his team should go into hiding.
Scott commented on the review, saying it was a ‘four-page demolition.’ She tore me apart, yet we’ve never even crossed paths! … It’s disrespectful. At my professional stature, it’s downright disrespectful.
