As a seasoned gamer with over two decades under my belt, I’ve seen my fair share of delays and technical hiccups in the gaming industry. However, the saga of Cities: Skylines 2 has been quite an unusual rollercoaster ride. The studio, Colossal Order, seems to be grappling with some rather peculiar issues, especially on console platforms.
Since the PC debut of Cities: Skylines 2 by Colossal Order last October, the game has faced some challenges. At launch, it encountered several technical problems and left some players feeling that it didn’t have as many features as its previous version. Despite these setbacks, enthusiasts of the series have eagerly anticipated updates regarding the console edition, but its release date has been postponed indefinitely.
Eurogamer reports that the game’s developer has explained on its Steam page some of the hurdles faced in the console release of the game. The developer stated they encountered both simulation problems related to the CPU and graphics problems linked to the GPU, which became apparent when players performed certain actions, leading to decreased frame rate and memory overload. The studio noted that these issues are particularly difficult to address due to the hardware constraints of consoles.

“For instance, when placing larger buildings that involve numerous entities, the system struggles to handle the data load. During the calculation process (e.g., checking if there’s enough space or if any entities overlap with existing assets), performance bottlenecks arise, resulting in these noticeable issues.”
The game is now playable and stable, but we had to lower the graphics quality quite a bit to reach this stage. However, this reduction in quality is a concession we’re not comfortable with. Once we improve it to an acceptable level, we will need to optimize both the simulation and memory usage further before releasing the console version.
Despite no immediate console release planned, Colossal Order emphasized that it remains a high priority for them. They’ve got several potential solutions in the works, with experts engaged to help find the best approach.
