Hans Niemann has reacted to the announcement that Netflix will release a new documentary on his chess controversy with Magnus Carlsen, revealing the release date.
The chess world was stunned in 2022 when Hans Niemann unexpectedly beat world champion Magnus Carlsen at the Sinquefield Cup. Carlsen then left the tournament and publicly accused Niemann of cheating, creating a major scandal that sparked widespread debate within the chess community.
The event sparked a lot of online discussion and led to numerous unproven theories about whether the Grandmaster had cheated during the tournament.
Chess.com published a report suggesting that Hans Niemann likely cheated in over 100 online chess games, some of which offered prizes. However, they stated they couldn’t definitively prove he cheated in games played in person against Magnus Carlsen. Niemann denied cheating in person and sued Carlsen, Chess.com, Hikaru Nakamura, and others for $100 million, claiming they damaged his reputation through false accusations and collaboration. The case was settled in 2023.
The event happened during a huge increase in chess’s popularity, sparked by the successful 2020 Netflix series, The Queen’s Gambit, and quickly became a widely discussed topic.

Netflix revealed on February 24th that its documentary covering the controversy will launch on April 7th. It’s one of four new episodes in the upcoming season of their Untold series, which starts streaming on March 31st.
Before the show is released, Niemann has publicly stated his belief that he will one day become a World Champion.
Hans Niemann says Netflix will “shift the narrative” about chess cheating scandal
After the announcement, the 22-year-old claimed his ability to overcome challenges demonstrated true “American resilience.”
He described a time when he faced widespread negative attacks and attempts to damage his reputation. During this period, he said, he received no support from any organizations or established allies, and false stories about him spread quickly online, threatening both his career and standing.
Everyone else seemed to have all the advantages – connections, money, people looking out for them. Me? I just had determination, a little bit of smarts, and a refusal to give up – that classic American attitude. But somehow, despite all that, I still managed to make it.
Honestly, it was rough. When everyone started attacking me with lies and coordinated campaigns, it felt like I was completely alone. Not one organization had my back. These false stories spread everywhere online and really threatened everything I’d worked for. Meanwhile, other people seemed to have endless resources and powerful teams supporting them… it just wasn’t a level playing field.

Niemann says this experience has made him more resilient, and he’s determined to keep getting better as a chess player. He’s aiming high – hoping to become a World Champion and is now seeking sponsorship to help him achieve that goal.
Before everyone focuses on the upcoming Netflix series, I’ve chosen an American company to support my journey to become World Champion, providing the funding and resources I need. I believe American success should be powered by American businesses, and I’m now accepting proposals from interested companies.
Netflix’s ‘Chess Mates’ documentary will reveal “the truth”, claims Niemann
The documentary appears to reveal fresh information about the scandal and aims to portray Niemann favorably.
The Netflix documentary, Chess Mates, tells the story of a dramatic rivalry between chess legend Magnus Carlsen and up-and-coming player Hans Niemann. As Niemann quickly gains prominence in the increasingly popular world of online chess, he ultimately defeats Carlsen in a surprising and controversial match. This victory sparks accusations of cheating, and Niemann is forced to defend his reputation while striving to regain his position at the top, leading to a highly anticipated rematch with Carlsen.

Before sharing the post, the GM previewed the upcoming documentary, writing, “The truth, reckoning, and revolution are coming.”
Meanwhile, at the time of writing, Carlsen has yet to comment on the documentary announcement.
The story behind the Carlsen-Niemann chess scandal is heading to the big screen. A24 is developing a movie called ‘Checkmate’ about the controversy, but a release date hasn’t been announced yet.
