Halo Remake “Warms My Heart,” Original Dev Says

Marcus Lehto, a key creator of the Halo series and the original designer of Master Chief, has shared his positive reaction to the new Halo 1 remake. He says he’s very impressed with what’s been shown so far.

Lehto described the game as visually stunning and remarkably faithful to the original Xbox version from 2001.

According to Lehto, seeing the updated Halo: Combat Evolved campaign is fantastic. He feels it truly captures the spirit of the original game and wishes they could have created it this beautifully back in 2001. He expressed how happy he is to see Halo CE reimagined this way.

Not everyone agrees with this view, however. Jaime Griesemer, another original Halo designer, publicly criticized some of the recent changes. Halo has always been a source of debate among fans, and that’s still the case.

The remastered version of the original Halo, titled Halo: Combat Evolved, will release in 2026 on Xbox Series X|S, PC, and PlayStation 5. For over 20 years, Halo has been a console exclusive to Xbox, but that’s changing with the franchise’s 25th anniversary. And this might not be a one-time appearance on PlayStation, as the developers at Halo Studios have confirmed that Halo will continue to be available on PlayStation in the future.

Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary boasts updated graphics, additional story missions that take place before the original game, a wider variety of weapons, and the addition of sprinting. While some changes to the Warthog vehicle aren’t favored by one of the game’s creators, the remake will offer cooperative campaign play. You can see a detailed comparison between the new and original versions in the video linked above.

The price of Halo: Campaign Evolved hasn’t been revealed yet, but it will be released on all platforms simultaneously – unlike previous releases that prioritized Xbox and PC. Forza Horizon 6, planned for 2026, will follow this same multi-platform launch strategy, meaning PlayStation 5 players won’t have to wait longer to play.

I’m so hyped for Halo: Combat Evolved! But it sounds like that’s not all Microsoft is planning. I’ve heard whispers about another Halo game in the works – a live-service one, which means it’ll be constantly updated with new content. They didn’t talk about it at the same event where they showed off Combat Evolved, but they have said before they’re making several new Halo games. The really cool thing is they’re building all of these new games, including Combat Evolved, using Unreal Engine 5. It’s going to look amazing!

I was really excited when Marcus Lehto left Microsoft to start his own studio, V1 Interactive, and they made Disintegration. Sadly, it didn’t really catch on, and the studio ended up closing. Then, he went to EA to work on the next Battlefield game, but he left in February 2024. It’s been tough seeing him talk about how he and some of his team weren’t included in the credits for Battlefield 6 – it just doesn’t seem right after all his contributions.
