In the forthcoming Spring Update for Halo Infinite, a fresh power weapon will make its debut – the Fuel Rod SPNKr, a weapon that veteran Halo players might recognize but will find it has some unique twists.
The weapon isn’t precisely the Fuel Rod Cannon from Halo 2, but instead, it’s an UNSC SPNKr rocket launcher that the Banished in Halo Infinite have significantly altered to discharge fuel rods.
The weapon has features similar to the popular Fuel Rod Cannon from the franchise, such as a big ammo capacity and powerful green blasts of explosive plasma. However, it functions somewhat differently. The key distinction is that the Fuel Rod SPNKr’s plasma bolts do not ricochet off targets; instead, they behave like Halo’s standard rocket launcher.
343 Industries, previously known as Halo Studios, has been consistently introducing fresh weapons into Halo Infinite since its launch. The Bandit DMR was the first new addition three years post-launch, followed by the MA5K Avenger towards the end of last year and now, the Fuel Rod SPNKr just a few months later. In a recent blog post detailing various upcoming changes for Halo Infinite’s 2025 Spring Update on February 4, the developers confirmed they are developing another new weapon – a shotgun with Banished-themed aesthetics, expected to arrive as part of the Summer Update.
Highlighting the Fuel Rod SPNKr as a key feature of the Spring Update, Halo Studios is also reviving a favorite game mode from Halo 2 – Assault, where players plant bombs instead of capturing flags. Other features in this update include a remake of the Coliseum map from Halo 5 and adjustments to weapon balances. Furthermore, the game’s premium Operations Pass will undergo an upgrade with more armor sets available for purchase, while allowing players to acquire armor sets from past passes on The Exchange using in-game currency (Halo Infinite’s cosmetic shop) a season after their initial debut.
At present, Halo Studios is engaged in various upcoming Halo ventures; however, they’ve kept tight-lipped about the specifics. Lately, they’ve transitioned to using Unreal Engine 5 for future games within the franchise, which led them to unveil Project Foundry – a prototype utilizing Unreal Engine that serves as both training material and a sneak peek into the potential future of Halo. In a blog post discussing this change (and their new studio name), they expressed that transitioning to Unreal and rebranding marks the beginning of a fresh era for the franchise. Since the shift to Unreal is still in its early stages, it was emphasized that a new game in the series isn’t expected immediately.
There are persisting whispers that classic Halo games initially released only on Xbox, plus an alleged update of Halo: Combat Evolved, might be unveiled for PlayStation 5, given Microsoft’s recent policy shift towards multi-platform game launches. Yet, no formal confirmations have been disclosed as of now.
