Over the past two decades, gaming enthusiasts have been eagerly searching for any hint that Valve might be working on Half-Life 3. Yet, the twentieth anniversary of Half-Life 2 passed without a single word about the long-awaited sequel. Now, the voice actor behind the mysterious G-Man character in the Half-Life series, Mike Shapiro, has posted a puzzling New Year’s message on his platform X, leading some fans to wonder if we might finally see the release of Half-Life 3 this year.

In a short audio clip, Shapiro adopts his eerie G-Man tone and remarks, “I hope the next 25 years bring as many unforeseen occurrences as the first millennium did.” He then suggests an enigmatic idea that time flows like music and promises to meet again in the coming year.

According to a report by Gabe Follower, who is known as a leaker at Valve, Half-Life 3 has allegedly moved into playtesting phase for close associates of Valve developers, such as family and friends. If this turns out to be true, it’s quite astonishing that there hasn’t been much chatter about it, given that it might imply the game is closer than we think based on other reports.

Fervent enthusiasts of the series have long been yearning for a conclusion to the nail-biting cliffhanger at the end of Half-Life 2 Episode 2, released in 2007, which left our protagonists in perilous circumstances. At one point, there were plans for Half-Life 2: Episode 3, set in the Arctic. As revealed in a documentary on Half-Life 2 by Valve last year, development on Episode 3 was underway for six months before it was shelved. Instead, the team moved onto creating Left 4 Dead. Since then, the only fresh addition to the series has been the VR game Half-Life: Alyx, launched in 2020.
