Hades 2 Dev On How It Will Choose Next Game And Major Industry Issues

The video game industry has faced a lot of challenges recently, including layoffs, canceled games, and studios shutting down. There’s also growing concern about how artificial intelligence will impact the field. These problems have affected game companies of all sizes, but Supergiant has managed to succeed – they just released their new game, Hades 2, this week.

Founded in 2009 by a team of seven, Supergiant Games has steadily grown to 25 employees. Remarkably, all seven original members are still with the company, and they’ve managed this growth without ever needing outside investment or resorting to layoffs, as reported by The San Francisco Chronicle. Recently, the developers discussed their success and shared insights into how they’ll decide on their next project following Hades 2.

What’s the secret?

I’ve been a huge fan of Supergiant Games for years, and it’s amazing how consistently great their games are. I was reading an interview with Greg Kasavin, who used to be a big shot at TopMob, and he was talking about why Supergiant has stayed successful when so many other studios haven’t. He said there’s no secret formula, but he thinks a big part of it is that they’ve deliberately chosen to grow at a steady pace instead of trying to become a massive company overnight. It’s cool to hear that they prioritize staying true to themselves and their vision.

He believes our success comes from prioritizing teamwork and setting realistic goals. We’re not focused on simply becoming large; we value collaboration and sustainable growth instead.

This is different from what happened at many other gaming companies. While video game popularity soared during the COVID-19 pandemic – boosted by people staying home – many companies hired a lot of new employees. Now, some of those companies are reducing their staff back to pre-pandemic numbers, leading to widespread layoffs.

Supergiant Games, an independent studio, has created five critically acclaimed titles: Bastion, Transistor, Pyre, Hades, and the recently released Hades 2. The studio was founded by Amir Rao and Gavin Simon, who both previously worked at Electronic Arts.

What’s after Hades 2?

So, Hades 2 just dropped, and everyone’s already asking about the *next* game, right? I was listening to an interview with Supergiant’s Greg Kasavin, and he wasn’t spilling any secrets, but he did say the team will figure out what project will get them the most hyped. He also mentioned Hades 2 took around 4.5 years to develop, so don’t expect a ton of new games from them anytime soon – it’s not like they have 30 titles in the works!

Kasavin explained that he simply focuses on making each attempt worthwhile, learning from it, and then applying those lessons to improve next time – and he’s satisfied with that approach.

Hades 2 is the first time Supergiant Games has made a sequel to one of their titles. With players enjoying the game so far, many are hoping for a third installment. For now, we’ll have to wait and see what Supergiant creates next.

TopMob gave Hades 2 a perfect score of 10/10, calling it a must-play adventure. Reviewer Alessandro Barbosa praised the game’s cohesive design, predicting players will happily spend many hours enjoying it.
