Hacks Spinoff Potential After Season 5 Ending Addressed By Stars

Hacks will soon becoming to an end, but its stars suggest that this might not be the last laugh.

The HBO comedy series Hacks began in 2021 and quickly became a hit. Starring Jean Smart and Hannah Einbinder, the show centers on the unlikely bond between a veteran comedian and a young, up-and-coming performer. After four successful seasons, the fifth season of Hacks will premiere on Thursday, April 9th.

Paul W. Downs, Megan Stalter, and Robby Hoffman, stars of the show Hacks, recently discussed the potential for a spin-off series in an interview with Tatiana Hullender from ScreenRant. Although Downs mentioned wanting to end the show strongly, Stalter expressed her belief that a spin-off would be a good idea. You can find their complete comments below.

ScreenRant:

It’s bittersweet knowing this is the last season – creatively, it’s tough to say goodbye. Broad City had a great run of five seasons, and I’m confident we can do the same. Thinking about that show, what lessons did you learn about bringing a series to a natural conclusion?

Paul W. Downs:

We felt it was important, like with ‘Broad City,’ to end the show before it lost its spark. We wanted viewers to be left wanting more, remembering it fondly. It’s a common idea in comedy – end strong and leave the audience with a good feeling. That’s what we’re aiming for this time – a memorable and impactful finale.

ScreenRant:

So, we don’t want to rush into planning spin-offs, but Megan, are there any parts of Kayla’s story you’d still like to explore? Or do you have any ideas about what might happen to her down the road?

Megan Stalter:

I’m really enthusiastic about creating a spinoff show, and I’d happily keep it going for a very long time – I’m thinking 25 seasons, not just five! I tend to push things further than I should, whether it’s running late on stage or just generally overdoing it, and I love it. I don’t care if people think I should stop; I’m enjoying myself too much. Sometimes the audience seems ready for me to finish, but I’m still having a blast. I have no intention of stopping, but I think a spinoff is a great idea with a lot of potential, maybe even exploring what happens after a marriage. I just have a lot of ideas and energy for this.

Paul W. Downs:

It’s hard to say for sure. We don’t really have insight into their personal lives, and there’s a lot happening with the show – particularly involving Deborah and Ava – that goes on behind the scenes that we aren’t privy to.

Megan Stalter:

It’s funny—she has no idea how many male models he’s seeing, and he hasn’t even met the girlfriend he doesn’t have yet! I imagine Kayla is surprised and a little jealous when he starts getting attention. She doesn’t seem to be interested in a romantic relationship with Jimmy, but she definitely doesn’t want him to fall for someone else. She wants to maintain a unique connection with him and doesn’t want to share his affections.

In a recent interview, actress Hoffman shared an idea for a possible spin-off series. She suggested her character, Randi, could be working to market a real-life version of the fictional company, Schaefer & LuSaque. You can find the complete quote from Hoffman below.

ScreenRant:

I was chatting with Megan and Paul, and Megan suggested a spinoff show focusing on Schaefer and LuSaque. I’d definitely watch that! It got me thinking, though – is there anything about Randy’s personal life that you’re curious about, or any stories you’ve imagined for her outside of work?

Robby Hoffman:

Randy is likely trying to pitch the idea of a reality show based on Schaefer & LuSaque. It sounds like HBO, which is currently undergoing changes and exploring reality television again – specifically with the team behind the Gerard Carmichael show – is interested in documenting the rebuilding of the company. Robby and Randy might be discussing this outside, and within the context of their company’s story, Randy is actively trying to sell them on the concept as a TV show.

ScreenRant:

I love that idea.

Robby Hoffman:

She’s working to make the entertainment industry more accessible to fans, and as someone who connects with audiences, I think that’s a great idea. People are really curious about what goes on behind the scenes – they want to learn about groups like BTS and understand how agencies operate. They’re not interested in a polished version; they want to see the real, unfiltered truth, and that’s what we’re planning to deliver.

Downs isn’t just an actor in the series; he also helped create it. He previously worked on the comedy Broad City, where he was a director, writer, producer, and actor. He believes that, like Hacks, five seasons was the perfect length for Broad City.

Although Broad City didn’t get a spinoff, the cast of Hacks appears excited about the possibility of continuing the show beyond its current five seasons. Megan Stalter hinted at this enthusiasm, suggesting there’s public interest in a spinoff and that the characters Deborah and Ava still have stories to share.

While Hoffman’s idea for a spinoff featuring Schaefer and LuSaque seems unlikely now that Randi hasn’t been featured much, it’s still possible any popular character could get their own series.

Currently, the team behind Hacks hasn’t officially announced any plans for a spinoff. However, if the show continues to receive positive reviews, strong viewership, and awards, discussions about its future – including potential spinoffs – could start up again.
