A gym in northern China is getting a lot of attention for its new weight-loss competition, which offers an incredible reward: a Porsche Panamera.
A fitness center in Binzhou, China, launched a unique challenge on October 23rd: lose 50 kilograms (110 pounds) in three months and win a Porsche Panamera. The car, a 2020 model owned by the gym’s owner, is worth around 1.1 million yuan (about US$155,000).
The South China Morning Post reports that attendees will need to pay a 10,000 yuan (about US$1,400) fee. This covers both their meals and lodging at a training center where they’ll be completely isolated.
Coach Wang told Xiang Yang Video that the offer is genuine and the sign-up process has begun. He explained that registration will end when they have 30 people, and currently, about seven or eight have already registered.
Health experts warn against gym’s extreme weight loss challenge
The trend is popular on Chinese social media, but doctors are concerned it’s not only unattainable for most people, but also carries serious health risks and could even be fatal.
Dr. Zeng, a popular social media personality with over 3.5 million followers on Weibo, cautioned against losing half a kilogram (about one pound) each day. He explained that losing weight that quickly can lead to muscle loss, hormone problems, and potentially serious damage to your organs.

He explained that, for most people, this rate of progress will cause them to lose muscle instead of burning fat.
Gastrointestinal surgeon Pu Yansong agreed, warning that this practice could damage internal organs and should only be done under a doctor’s care.
Healthy weight loss happens best when it’s slow and steady, giving your brain, fat, muscles, and organs time to adjust to the change in how many calories you’re taking in.
Difficult challenges are becoming increasingly popular in China. Just recently, a man gained attention for winning a 70-day survival contest by eating rats, insects, and wild plants – he was the last one remaining out of 100 participants.
