Guy Ritchie is a well-known British director famous for his exciting and funny action movies. He gained a dedicated fanbase with films like the 2009 hit Sherlock Holmes, which starred Robert Downey Jr. as the famous detective. Now, after more than seventeen years, Ritchie is revisiting the character with a new series, Young Sherlock, which tells the story of Sherlock Holmes in his youth.
Prime Video’s upcoming series, Young Sherlock, features Hero Fiennes Tiffin as the iconic detective at age 19. With Sherlock Holmes being one of the most beloved fictional detectives ever created, this show is generating a lot of buzz, and there’s considerable excitement about what makes this new take on the character so promising.
Young Sherlock Is Based on a Book Series
Inspired by both Arthur Conan Doyle’s original Sherlock Holmes stories and Andrew Lane’s Young Sherlock Holmes novels, this series follows a teenage Sherlock as he develops his detective skills in the 1860s and 1870s – long before he becomes the famous detective we know today.
The Young Sherlock Holmes book series is designed for young adults and currently includes eight books. The first book, Death Cloud, was published in 2010 and introduces Sherlock as a 14-year-old. Future installments will portray Sherlock as a 19-year-old student at Oxford University, investigating a murder.
The Young Sherlock Holmes book series started because the Young Bond series was so popular. Young Bond, written by Charlie Higson and first published in 2005, proved successful enough that the estate of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle decided to greenlight a similar prequel series focusing on a young Sherlock Holmes.
The movie Enola Holmes, featuring Millie Bobby Brown from Stranger Things, showed that audiences are interested in stories set in the world of Sherlock Holmes that aren’t directly based on the original Arthur Conan Doyle stories. Enola Holmes is adapted from The Enola Holmes Mysteries book series, which tells the story of Sherlock Holmes’s younger sister, Enola, who is twenty years his junior.
Prequel series can be very successful, as demonstrated by the show that precedes The Big Bang Theory. But to work, these series need to stay true to the original story and maintain the core qualities of beloved characters – like why someone enjoys a detective such as Sherlock Holmes.
Guy Ritchie’s Young Sherlock Features a Talented Cast
The new Prime Video series, Young Sherlock, is generating buzz among mystery and Sherlock Holmes fans with just two months until its release. Hero Fiennes Tiffin, who gained popularity for his roles as young and Hardin in the After movies, will star as the lead.
I’m really excited about the cast they’re assembling for this new Sherlock Holmes project! Besides Fiennes Tiffin, Zine Tseng, who I loved in 3 Body Problem, is going to play Princess Gulun Shou’an. And Dónal Finn, who was great as Mat Cauthon in The Wheel of Time, is taking on the role of the classic villain, James Moriarty. They’ve also cast someone as Silas, and Natascha McElhone – I remember her from Halo – will be playing Sherlock’s mother, Cordelia, alongside whoever plays his father. Plus, Max Irons, who I’ve seen in Condor, is going to play Sherlock’s older brother, Mycroft. It’s a fantastic lineup!
The actor, known for roles in films like Bridget Jones’s Diary and The King’s Speech, will also play Sir Bucephalus Hodge in the upcoming Prime Video series Young Sherlock. The show will also feature Numan Acar (from Aladdin), Simon Delaney (Blue Moon), Adam James (Wicked), Rachel Shelley (The L Word), and other talented performers.
One of the main reasons everyone’s excited about Young Sherlock is the director, Guy Ritchie. He’s known for popular films like The Gentlemen (2019) and the crime series MobLand, as well as his work on the Sherlock Holmes movies.
As excitement built for the new series, the preview highlighted the action, humor, and adventure that made the Guy Ritchie Sherlock Holmes movies so beloved. Viewers are optimistic that ‘Young Sherlock’ will offer a fresh, energetic take on the classic stories, following Sherlock’s journey before he became the world’s most famous detective.
Prime Video’s Young Sherlock is scheduled to debut on March 4, 2026.
