Recently, Guy Pearce chatted with The Times during his bid for an Oscar in the category of “The Brutalist.” He recalled experiencing criticism and backlash from some within the industry due to his early acting stint on the well-known Australian soap opera “Neighbours,” where he was a cast member from 1986 to 1989.
Pearce expressed that he has numerous thoughts regarding that television series. Back in the past, being a theater or film actor was the norm, and if one found themselves in a soap opera, it was considered the bottom rung of the ladder. However, he considered it an exceptional chance. Admittedly, he had little idea about what he was doing but learned plenty from the experience. When young actors ask him for guidance, Pearce often responds with a shrug and suggests, “Luck may favor you,” as he believes his success stemmed from good fortune.
Pearce commented that “Neighbours,” which helped catapult stars like Kylie Minogue and Margot Robbie into the limelight, was looked down upon at the time. A year after he left, a pretentious actress sneered at him, saying, “How could you even be a part of that?” I felt like hitting her! Of course, I didn’t actually hit her. But it was an appalling attitude. Then, five years later, I saw her in a tacky commercial on TV. I wished I could find her and say, “Well…,” he recalled.
Pearce shared that the television series “Neighbours,” which launched stars such as Kylie Minogue and Margot Robbie, was not well-regarded at the time. A year after he departed, a haughty actress scoffed at him, asking, “How could you even be involved in that?” I felt like I wanted to retaliate! Fortunately, I didn’t resort to violence. But her attitude was disgraceful. Five years later, I saw her in a cheesy advertisement on TV. I wished I could confront her and say something like, “Now look at you…” he reminisced.
Pearce openly cherishes his origins in soap operas, returning unexpectedly to “Neighbours” in 2022 for its final episode in Australia. However, it seems that some roles he took on during the late 2010s, primarily for financial reasons due to his divorce, may not be as notable. Pearce parted ways with Kate Mestitz, his wife of 18 years, in 2015.
Pearce openly acknowledged that during his divorce, he took on various tasks primarily due to financial necessity. This period spanned from 2016 to 2018. During this time, he found himself considering scripts that he would have initially rejected. The need for money pushed him to broaden his tolerance levels, and thus, he felt a sense of relief once he had settled his divorce-related debts. However, this financial burden clouded his judgment at times. He often questioned whether the projects he was involved in were genuinely good or simply meant to help pay off his divorce expenses.
As a passionate moviegoer, I’m thrilled to share that Pearce is currently garnering exceptional career-peak acclaim for his role in “The Brutalist.” This performance has even landed him an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor!
