The timeless satire ‘Gulliver’s Travels’, penned by Jonathan Swift, is being modernized into a television adaptation.
Award-winning author Tom Bidwell, known for his Emmy and BAFTA winning work on “Watership Down”, has developed and penned a fresh six-part television series titled “The Gullivers”. He is collaborating with producers Xavier Marchand and Casey Herbert at Moonriver TV and Leo Becker of Federation Studios.
As a dedicated admirer of captivating tales, I’m thrilled to share that a new fantasy adventure series is in the works with a prominent European broadcaster. This exciting project is reminiscent of Moonriver’s recent series “Nautilus,” inspired by Jules Verne’s classic novel “Twenty Thousand Leagues under the Sea.” Currently available on Amazon Prime in the U.K., Stan in Australia, France 2, and soon to be broadcast on AMC in the U.S., this series has certainly made a splash! Interestingly, the production team behind this new project is no stranger to Verne’s universe, having previously adapted “Around the World in 80 Days” for Masterpiece PBS, BBC, and the European Alliance. I can hardly wait to dive into this imaginative world once again!
Bidwell’s interpretation of the tale is presented “from the perspective of Gulliver’s 21st-century spouse and offspring, who set out jointly on a rescue expedition.
Bidwell remarked, ‘Not many fictional works have left an imprint as profound on storytelling and culture as Swift’s masterpiece.’ It’s a work of extraordinary inventiveness that I’ve longed to reimagine, though I must admit, I was apprehensive about it. The group at Moonriver and Federation possess a wealth of expertise in adapting novels of this magnitude and complexity. When they proposed a contemporary retelling focusing on Lemuel’s kinship, I was delighted to assist them in bringing it to life on the big screen.’
Moonriver founder Marchand stated: “Tom Bidwell’s ‘The Gullivers’ is set to offer a visually stunning, imaginative, action-packed journey that will captivate a wide range of viewers. With its enduring appeal and instantly recognizable images, Swift’s classic story has always been a hit with the masses. This modern adaptation promises to rekindle interest in this timeless tale in a way that feels strikingly contemporary and relatable.
Becker from Federation expressed great excitement about teaming up with Moonriver to bring Tom’s fresh take on a timeless classic to the big screen. This is a story we’ve wanted to revisit for quite some time, and with Tom’s unparalleled voice combined with our shared four-quadrant expertise, we can now let new audiences experience Swift’s tale that remains remarkably relevant today.
The series titled ‘The Gullivers’ is a joint production between Moonriver TV, known for shows like ‘Nautilus’, ‘A Gentleman in Moscow’, and ‘Mrs Harris Goes to Paris’, and Federation Studios, recognized for productions such as ‘The Agency’, ‘The Bureau’, and ‘Around the World in Eighty Days’. Bidwell is responsible for creating and writing this series.
