Despite a lackluster performance in theaters when it was released in 2013, the movie Grudge Match is now finding success on streaming platforms. The film reunited Robert De Niro and Sylvester Stallone, who previously co-starred in the 1997 crime drama Cop Land. Grudge Match cleverly references their famous boxing roles: Stallone’s Rocky Balboa and De Niro’s Oscar-winning performance as Jake La Motta in the 1980 film Raging Bull.
As of today, January 16th, the movie Grudge Match is the eighth most popular film on Paramount+ in the United States. It’s currently outperforming PAW Patrol: The Movie but is behind titles like The Running Man (2025), Roofman, the original The Running Man from 1987, Regretting You, Fighting, Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, and Top Gun: Maverick.
Grudge Match, directed by Peter Segal and written by Rodney Rothman and Tim Kelleher, features Sylvester Stallone and Robert De Niro as two former boxing rivals. After thirty years of retirement, they’re tempted to settle the score with one last fight.
The film features a talented cast including Kevin Hart, the late Alan Arkin (known for Little Miss Sunshine), Oscar winner Kim Basinger (L.A. Confidential), Jon Bernthal, LL Cool J, Anthony Anderson, and Joey Diaz. Several personalities appear as themselves, such as Jim Lampley, Steve Levy, John Buccigross, Mike Goldberg, Chael Sonnen, Larry Merchant, Roy Jones Jr., Michael Buffer, Mike Tyson, and Evander Holyfield.
Critics didn’t like Grudge Match very much, giving it a low 31% score on Rotten Tomatoes. While some moments were funny, they found the movie lacked focus and wasted the talents of its actors with a predictable plot. Audiences weren’t much more enthusiastic, giving it a 46% rating.
I recently checked out Grudge Match, and honestly, it’s exactly what you’d expect. As ScreenRant‘s Sandy Schaefer put it, it’s a pretty formulaic Hollywood comedy that leans heavily on nostalgia, but it does manage to deliver on its simple goals. Variety‘s Andrew Barker also chimed in with his thoughts, adding to the overall consensus…
Okay, so this movie felt like they tried to recreate the magic of ‘Grumpy Old Men,’ but with older versions of Rocky and Jake from the boxing movies. It had a few funny moments, and Alan Arkin and Kevin Hart were great in it, but honestly, it tried too hard. It ended up feeling forced and kind of missed the point of what would have made it really work.
Peter Travers of Rolling Stone found Grudge Match deeply disappointing, stating that seeing De Niro and Stallone revisit their famous roles brought him no joy and simply made him feel sad. Peter Bradshaw in The Guardian was even more critical, calling the film a terrible and pointless waste of time, and wishing he could go back in time to erase it from his memory and protect his appreciation of Raging Bull.
