Unlike many departures on the show, this one promises a happy ending for the couple. Shonda Rhimes, the show’s creator, shared that it’s both sad and wonderful to give Owen and Teddy the joyful conclusion their love story deserves. Owen Hunt arrived at Seattle Grace Hospital before it became Grey Sloan Memorial, and his storyline actually played a part in the name change. He was introduced in season five as a potential love interest for Cristina Yang—they first met when he saved her life by removing an icicle impaled in her. While Owen became a somewhat controversial character with fans, actor Kevin McKidd went on to direct many episodes of the show, including his final one. Kim Raver, who played Teddy Altman, also directed three episodes and expressed gratitude to Debbie Allen, who mentored her and encouraged her to become a director. Teddy first appeared in season six and has been involved in an ongoing, complicated relationship with Owen ever since.
