As a passionate cinephile, I’m thrilled to share that Greta Gerwig has successfully wielded her magnetic charm as a leading lady in “Barbie” to persuade Netflix into granting her the grand, sweeping theatrical release she envisioned for her adaptation of C.S. Lewis’ enchanting “Narnia” series.
Following several rounds of discussions, IMAX officially declared that “The Chronicles of Narnia” will have its global premiere exclusively on their screens, starting two weeks prior to its Netflix release. As of now, “The Chronicles of Narnia” is scheduled to make its IMAX debut on Thanksgiving Day 2026. The film will later be available on Netflix at Christmas time in the same year.
The Imax premiere is an uncommon event for the streaming service, as it occasionally offers limited, Academy Award-eligible theatrical releases for its award contenders like “Emilia Perez” and “Maria”. However, it usually prefers to debut its movies, especially those with a broader commercial appeal, on its platform. There have been exceptions. For instance, in 2022, Netflix granted “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery” an exclusive one-week run in over 600 theaters, which was its widest theatrical release to date. Other streaming platforms have adopted a more flexible approach to cinema distribution, with Amazon and Apple debuting movies in cinemas, and allowing them to screen there for extended periods, sometimes even for months, before they become available on their streaming services. This strategy has made it difficult for Netflix to secure some high-profile projects that prefer to premiere in theaters first.
2018 saw Netflix revealing plans to create new TV shows and movies from C.S. Lewis’ “The Chronicles of Narnia” series. Two years later, in 2020, Gerwig – who had been nominated for an Oscar for her direction on “Lady Bird” and was also responsible for a critically acclaimed adaptation of “Little Women” – joined the project. Since then, Gerwig’s fame has grown significantly. In 2023, she directed “Barbie,” which became the year’s most successful film, raking in almost $1.5 billion globally and turning into a pop culture sensation known for its bright pink motif.
All told, the collection of seven Narnia books has achieved sales exceeding 115 million copies globally and has been adapted into 57 different languages. Netflix is optimistic that these movies could establish their next successful franchise.
Puck first reported that a deal with Imax had been reached.
