Variety posted the announcement on X with one notable mistake that called for a “community note.”
According to a post on X (formerly Twitter), ‘Gremlins 3’ is scheduled to hit theaters on November 19, 2027. Chris Columbus will direct the film, and Steven Spielberg will serve as an executive producer.
Many X users commented to clarify that Joe Dante directed both Gremlins and Gremlins 2: The New Batch.
Despite writing the script for the first Gremlins movie, Chris Columbus didn’t direct it when it came out in 1984. He also wasn’t involved with the making of the 1990 sequel.
Big Names For Gremlins 3
Big names in Hollywood are already working on Gremlins 3. Steven Spielberg will be an executive producer, and Chris Columbus – known for directing the first two Harry Potter films – is set to direct.

Zach Lipovsky and Adam Stein, the team behind Final Destination: Bloodlines and “Freaks,” are writing the screenplay together.
Kristie Macosko Krieger and Holly Bario from Amblin Entertainment will produce the movie, alongside Michael Barnathan and Mark Radcliffe of 26th Street Pictures. Chris Columbus will direct and also serve as a producer.
The Original Gremlins – The Christmas / Horror Classic That Birthed The PG-13 Rating
The original Gremlins from 1984 is a surprisingly popular Christmas movie, blending heartwarming holiday themes with scary moments.
The story centers around a teenager named Billy and a unique, adorable, and enigmatic pet he receives as a gift – a creature he names Gizmo.
When the rules for taking care of Gizmo are broken, he multiplies into a group of troublesome, lizard-like creatures called Mogwai. These gremlins cause chaos throughout the town, and the film quickly shifts from a cheerful Christmas story to a frightening horror film filled with violent acts.

When Gremlins came out in July 1984, it received a PG rating – a relatively new category at the time, with only “G”, “R”, and “X” previously available. Despite this, the film’s violent scenes upset many parents who believed the movie was too intense for young children, especially since it was heavily advertised with toys and merchandise aimed at them.
Honestly, all the fuss about scary movies being too intense for kids finally got Steven Spielberg to step in. He wanted a way to let parents know if a film had stuff that might not be right for younger viewers, but didn’t necessarily deserve an R rating. And that’s how the PG-13 rating came about! The very first movie to get it was Red Dawn back in 1984 – I remember being so excited to finally see it!
Why Is Gremlins Returning Now?
Warner Bros. Pictures president Jesse Ehrman told Variety that they are thrilled to be bringing back the classic film Gremlins for both longtime fans and a new audience. He expressed excitement about collaborating with Steven Spielberg, Chris Columbus, and the rest of the creative team to deliver another installment filled with the film’s signature magic, mischief, and emotion, which is expected to hit theaters in 2027.
Bringing back franchises from the 1980s can be risky, with some attempts failing and others succeeding. For example, the new Tron movie, Tron Ares, wasn’t well-received, but Cobra Kai was a huge success, reigniting interest in The Karate Kid.

The Netflix series Stranger Things, a blend of science fiction and horror, has become incredibly popular around the world, largely due to its 1980s setting and spooky storylines. Interestingly, the original film Gremlins shares many of these same appealing qualities.
With a dedicated fanbase and its reputation as a beloved Christmas horror film, a well-made Gremlins 3 could be very successful for Warner Bros.
