As a passionate film enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that “Grassland,” an engaging feature drama, will be hitting the screens next month, thanks to Gravitas Ventures. This gripping production, executive produced by the multi-talented Common, is all set for its release in April. After securing the distribution rights for both the United States and Canada, we’re eagerly waiting to immerse ourselves in this captivating tale.
Grassland” marks the first directorial effort of William Bermudez and Sam Friedman (who also wrote the script). The story centers around a Latina mother whose son befriends a new neighborhood boy and his grandfather, a police officer. However, this friendship leads to complications as the mother operates a marijuana business with the help of a young Black man, putting both of them in jeopardy. The film is set against the backdrop of New Jersey during the 2008 economic recession and Barack Obama’s presidential campaign.
Gravitas Ventures is eager to debut ‘Grassland,’ an exhilarating exploration into the challenging repercussions of striking a delicate balance between upholding family obligations and navigating the murky waters of law and the intricate criminal justice system. Masterfully directed by Mía Maestro, Quincy Isaiah, Jeff Kober, and Ravi Cabot-Conyers, viewers can expect characters that will challenge not just authority, but the very essence of trust, family, and friendship. Bill Guentzler, senior vice president of acquisitions and operations at Gravitas Ventures, made this announcement in a statement.
I had the pleasure of attending the worldwide debut of this captivating movie at the Los Angeles Latino International Film Festival, and it was equally mesmerizing when I caught it at the Monterrey International Film Festival for its global unveiling. Most recently, I was enthralled by it again at the Pan African Film & Arts Festival. This cinematic gem is truly a must-see on the festival circuit!
Adam Edery and David Goldblum serve as the film’s producers, while executive producers include the actors Maestro, Kober, Isaiah, as well as Paul Blavin, Amy Blavin, Marie Cisco, Mara Burros Sandler, plus Jeremy Paczos and Sam Silverstein under Exit 14. The music is composed by Zach Nicita.
The movie collaborates with Common’s organization, Free to Dream, alongside Shinola and Last Prisoner Project, for its social initiative.
