This past week has been quite unusual for late-night television. The shows based in Los Angeles, such as “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” and “After Midnight”, only aired episodes on Monday and Tuesday. The reason behind this is that Los Angeles is currently grappling with its worst wildfires ever. A variety of individuals, from everyday Angelenos to Billy Crystal, families in Altadena for generations, and even Club Chalamet residents, have lost their homes due to these fires. In just 72 hours, Los Angeles has undergone a significant transformation.

From a film enthusiast’s perspective, it feels as if climate change will unfold like a movie, shot up-close and personal by everyday people using their phones. As Los Angeles, a city brimming with cinematographers and content creators, we’ve witnessed these disasters from every angle imaginable. Even our late-night shows, the ones that managed to stay on air, discussed the trials our industry town is encountering. Through hazy lenses, we watched as events unfolded on our screens, but life goes on – for better or worse. Here’s what left a lasting impact on me.

Jason Kelce Enters the Late-Night Fray

It’s uncertain if Jason Kelce’s new ESPN talk show, They Call It Late Night, will consistently appear on this list, but we must acknowledge his impressive first-ever cold open. Dressed in Mummers Parade regalia, Kelce shares a tender moment with Philadelphia’s Lincoln Financial Field, even giving it a warm embrace. His emotional vulnerability and openness towards this stadium surpasses that of many late-night hosts throughout their entire careers. In his inaugural monologue, Kelce acknowledges Conan O’Brien, reflecting O’Brien’s influence on the structure of his show. Philadelphia is a peculiar and unconventional city. I once witnessed a woman sprinting down Broad Street clutching someone else’s weave and laughing maniacally – much like the Wicked Witch of the West, but donning an Eagles jersey. Infusing more of Philadelphia’s distinctive character into late-night television can only be beneficial.

It’s worth noting that New York City is facing challenges due to the introduction of congestion pricing in Manhattan. The Daily Show took advantage of this situation for some classic street interviews, with Josh Johnson conducting them. The most memorable moment was when a person said New Yorkers use “Fuck you” as a term of endearment, and then Johnson and the interviewee playfully reciprocated that phrase to each other in a loving manner. It’s quite charming!

Seth Meyers Learns About Circuit Parties

I’ve made this point before, I’ll repeat it now, and here it is again: Seth Meyers stands out as the most adaptable talk-show host. He isn’t shy about appearing foolish or unknowledgeable if he believes there’s humor in having Matt Rogers clarify what a circuit party entails. And then he casually references this new knowledge for some jokes later on. That’s what they call being a pro. Go ahead and research it, folks.

“The People Yearn for Monk Books!”

As a passionate movie critic, allow me to share my latest discovery – I’ve found myself utterly captivated by the exhilarating “After Midnight” game! In this unique showcase, comedians unleash their infectious passion over their real-life fixations, often leaving little room for structured thought. If you’re in search of some top-tier emotional outbursts, then look no further than this captivating video.

Pete Holmes, with an energy that knows no bounds, can hardly contain his excitement as he discusses the trials and tribulations of a dad facing the Family Double Dare challenge. Corin Wells skillfully navigates the enigma of JC Chasez, asking all the questions on everyone’s mind – except one: Why is ‘N Sync credited as duetting with Blaque on “Bring It All to Me,” when it’s only JC singing?

But what truly takes my breath away is Zach Cherry’s heartfelt plea for everyone to delve into the intriguing world of the Monk novels. His fervor is nothing short of awe-inspiring. Don’t miss out on this unforgettable journey through the minds and hearts of some of the most entertaining personalities in the comedy world!

Pete Lee Posts Through the Pain

In these extraordinary times we find ourselves living in, here’s a strategy for coping: Life will continue to throw us unexpected challenges, or “lemons” as some might say. We have the power to choose how we respond. Will we, as Paul Rudd suggests in “Forgetting Sarah Marshall,” decide to ignore the lemons and move on? Or will we try to deal with them emotionally? Perhaps, like Pete Lee, we can find humor in our circumstances and make something out of it – a comedy routine about lemons, for instance. After all, maybe the only way to get through tough times is by creating content and finding joy wherever we can.
