Beware of the misleading name. Contrary to its title, Hulu’s upcoming drama series Good American Family is not centered around a typical American family. Instead, it focuses on the extraordinary true story of Natalia Grace and her adoptive parents, Michael and Kristine Barnett.
As a passionate viewer, let me share my perspective: “What you might be questioning is whether a TV show released in February 2025 can truly claim the title of ‘the most controversial.’ However, I’m referring to its immense potential, contingent upon how it handles sensitive topics and maintains an unbiased approach while portraying two contrasting perspectives.
In 2010, Kristine and Michael claimed that their adopted daughter, Natalia, was actually a grown psychopath disguised as a child. However, according to Natalia herself, she was subjected to abuse and neglect by the Barnetts.
In 2012, Michael and Kristine altered Natalia’s legal age from eight to 22, and subsequently relocated her to an isolated apartment on her own. Later, it was necessary for her to undergo extensive DNA testing to verify that she was indeed a child during this ordeal. Since then, numerous events have unfolded in the aftermath of these events. (Written from a fan’s perspective: I learned that in 2012, Michael and Kristine manipulated Natalia’s age from eight to 22, moving her to an isolated apartment all by herself. Later on, she had to go through extensive DNA testing to prove her true age during this situation. Since then, a whole lot has taken place.)
Good American Family dramatizes the contentious Natalia Grace case

Despite the Barnetts being accused of neglecting a dependent in 2019, these accusations did not result in a trial as the charges were dismissed. This leaves Good American Family with two challenging realities: firstly, the case never underwent legal proceedings, and secondly, public opinion towards the Barnetts remains highly critical (to express it mildly).
If you’re familiar with the series comprising of The Curious Case of Natalia Grace, Natalia Speaks, and The Final Chapter, it’s evident that the Barnetts portrayed their encounter with Natalia as reminiscent of the narrative in the thriller film titled Orphan.
They stated that she was expected to stand at the bottom of their bed at night, armed with a knife; she made an attempt to poison Kristine, and she tried to inflict harm upon their biological offspring.
However, detailed conversations with Natalia, Michael (who now views Kristine as a “monster”), their son Jacob, specialists, and acquaintances hint that the alleged claims against Kristine might be unfounded.
To clarify, it’s generally understood that Natalia was exposed to both physical and emotional mistreatment during her stay at the Barnetts’ residence. Later on, as a child with a disability, she was left to navigate life independently. However, it is important to note that these abuse allegations have not been officially confirmed in a court of law.
It’s clear that the storyline proposed by the Barnetts poses substantial difficulties for Hulu’s portrayal of The Good American Family.
Discussing a contentious, emotionally intense scenario without any legal documents for reference makes it challenging enough. However, attempting to portray this delicate situation is as difficult as walking a tightrope while wearing a blindfold.
There be Monsters
According to Ryan Murphy’s perspective, the series “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story,” despite being a ratings hit, faced considerable criticism due to its depiction of the notorious brothers.
Although Lyle and Erik went through the legal proceedings that resulted in their conviction for murdering their parents, the general public’s view of them has undergone a significant transformation since the 1990s.
Discussions surrounding the alleged traumatic experiences in their childhood, such as accusations of parental abuse, have added layers of intricacy to the case. Murphy’s work aimed to portray this complexity by presenting diverse viewpoints, yet the dramatization often found it challenging to maintain a balanced approach.
Admittedly, the overly dramatic elements made things difficult. Speaking of the controversial incest scenes, let’s just move past them. Regardless, balancing out perspectives isn’t an easy task, and even if it weren’t a Murphy production, it would still be quite challenging.
To clarify, I’m not trying to bring down the mood here, but it’s worth mentioning that there’s also the topic of Kristine Barnett. In fact, Ellen Pompeo from Grey’s Anatomy has been chosen for the part, and Kristine herself announced this on her Facebook page.
She expressed her optimism that the true story about her family would be revealed now that Disney is airing The Good American Family with Ellen Pompeo, a statement that drew criticism from those following the case.
Regardless of personal views, Kristine is an enigmatic individual who has declined to offer comments for any documentaries produced by ID. Representing her on-screen will prove challenging, not just for the scriptwriters, but also for Pompeo.
In an interview with Vanity Fair discussing Good American Family, she mentioned, “We’re crafting our unique interpretation of the story rather than directly mirroring their experiences, so it’s not a literal retelling of events.
In Hollywood, we primarily create entertainment that stimulates thinking, and we add our unique perspective to a given situation.
The final appearance of that spin remains uncertain, however, it has historical examples of intricate narrative development in true-crime adaptations. For instance, HBO’s “The Staircase” and “Love & Death” skillfully handled complex legal cases with enough ambiguity to enable viewers to reach their own interpretations.
As a gamer, if Good American Family manages to handle the delicate content with the finesse required, it could potentially emerge victorious, so to say. If not, then unfortunately, the show might just fulfill this forecast and dive into the deep, turbulent waters of online criticism.
