A Tale of Masks and Mirth
- The New York Times, with its quill dipped in folly, reignites the absurd dance of Adam Back and Satoshi Nakamoto.
- Back, with a sigh heavier than a Russian winter, denies the masquerade, calling it a circus of overfit speculation.
- Proof? As elusive as a nose in one of Gogol’s tales-Satoshi’s identity remains a ghostly enigma.
Ah, the internet, that vast bazaar of whispers and wonders, has once again donned its detective’s hat, this time to link Adam Back to the phantom Satoshi Nakamoto. A report from The New York Times, with all the gravitas of a goose chasing a carrot, has stirred the pot. Archived emails, forum posts, and linguistic patterns-oh my!-are trotted out like circus animals, each more absurd than the last.
The investigation, if one can call it that, weaves a tapestry of technical overlaps and historical crumbs, as if every breadcrumb led to a grand revelation. Yet, Back, with a shrug that could rival a Gogol protagonist’s bewilderment, dismisses it all. Circumstantial, he says. Overfit, he insists. And so the dance continues, a waltz of speculation and denial.
Why the Fuss, You Ask?
Ah, the report points to Back’s Hashcash, a proof-of-work system as old as the hills, referenced in Bitcoin’s white paper. Stylistic similarities! Ideological alignment! A 2008 email exchange, perhaps staged, perhaps not-who can say? The Times, with its magnifying glass, sees shadows where others see light.
And yet, the evidence, like a nose that grows with every lie, remains unsupported by direct proof. A staged interaction? Pure conjecture, as flimsy as a Gogol character’s resolve.
Back’s Retort: “I Am Not This Satoshi”
Back, ever the straight man in this comedy of errors, takes to X (formerly Twitter, for the uninitiated) to proclaim his innocence. “I’m not Satoshi,” he declares, with all the exasperation of a man who’s heard this tune before. His interest in cryptography, privacy, and electronic cash? Merely a coincidence, he insists, as common as a nose on a face.
i’m not satoshi, but I was early in laser focus on the positive societal implications of cryptography, online privacy and electronic cash, hence my ~1992 onwards active interest in applied research on ecash, privacy tech on cypherpunks list which led to hashcash and other ideas.

Yet, the rumors persist, like a stubborn cold in a Gogol novella. Overlapping expertise? Circumstantial evidence? The internet, ever the dramatist, refuses to let the curtain fall.
Evidence, or Mere Shadows on the Wall?
The case against Back, if one can call it a case, relies on circumstantial links as thin as a Gogol character’s sanity. Shared technical ideas, writing similarities, timing-all as common as noses in a crowd. Direct proof? As absent as a protagonist’s spine in a Gogol tale. Control over early Bitcoin wallets, the ultimate key, remains locked away, dormant for over a decade.
A Crypto Comedy of Errors
Back joins a rogues’ gallery of Satoshi suspects, each more absurd than the last. Developers, academics, entrepreneurs-all have been paraded as the phantom creator. Even Jeffrey Epstein, in a twist darker than a Gogol plot, was once rumored to be the man behind the mask. Yet, none have been proven, and many have been dismissed with a laugh and a shrug.
The Mystery Endures, as Mysteries Do
Since Bitcoin’s birth in 2008, Satoshi’s identity has remained as hidden as a Gogol character’s true intentions. The creator’s departure in 2011 left behind a system that thrives without a central figure, a true absurdist masterpiece. Despite the latest flurry of speculation, the question remains unanswered. Adam Back, for now, remains a footnote in Bitcoin’s history, not its author.
And so, dear reader, we leave you with this: in a world of masks and mirth, perhaps the greatest mystery is not who Satoshi is, but why we care so much. After all, as Gogol might say, the nose knows-and sometimes, it’s best not to follow it.
