Godzilla’s Death Announced, New Art Pays Homage to Superman

Recently, Godzilla has fought many of Marvel and DC’s most powerful heroes, but none could defeat him. That will change in 2026 when someone finally manages to kill the seemingly undefeatable King of the Monsters. This historic event will be celebrated with a special comic book cover inspired by the famous ‘The Death of Superman‘ storyline.

Godzilla #6, created by Tim Seeley and Nikola Čižmešija, will feature a special cover honoring the iconic ‘The Death of Superman.’ This tribute cover will be illustrated by Dan Jurgens and Brett Breeding, the original artist and inker of that classic story, with colors by Gregg Whitmore. You can see the cover below.

I was really excited when IDW approached me about doing a special ‘Death of Godzilla’ cover. They wanted it to echo the famous Superman #75 cover Brett Breeding and I did years ago, and I immediately said yes! I’ve always been a huge Godzilla fan, but I’d never actually gotten to draw him before, so this was a fantastic opportunity. It was just a lot of fun to be involved!

Why is Godzilla dying in the comics?

IDW is openly acknowledging that Godzilla will die in an upcoming story, but they’re keeping the specifics under wraps. Aaron John Gregory, who manages Godzilla products, assures fans the story will honor Godzilla’s history and might even bring a tear to their eye – he suggests having plenty of tissues on hand.

Gregory stressed the importance of taking this comic event seriously, comparing it to the impact of the ‘Death of Superman’ storyline. He remembered being deeply affected by the shocking events in that comic and believes the creative team behind the new Godzilla era, Kai-Sei, has delivered something equally powerful. Gregory also highlighted TOHO International’s confidence in how IDW has been handling the Godzilla franchise.

Godzilla #6 arrives in comic shops everywhere on January 7, 2026.
