The upcoming God of War TV series for Amazon Prime Video is gaining momentum. Frederick E.O. Toye, the Emmy-winning director known for his work on shows like Shogun and The Boys, will be directing the first two episodes. This series is being developed by Ronald D. Moore, who is famous for Battlestar Galactica.
Moore is overseeing the entire show as showrunner, writer, and executive producer. Production is now starting in Vancouver, and they’re beginning to cast actors, though no names have been announced yet.
Prime Video is where you can watch the popular show Fallout, with the second season arriving this month. Plus, they’re developing TV series based on the video games Wolfenstein and Mass Effect. They’ve also already greenlit two seasons of a TV adaptation of God of War.
Moore didn’t initially work on the God of War TV series. He joined the project in late 2024 after significant changes led to the departure of many of the show’s original creative leaders.
I was at Comic-Con and heard from the creator about how the 2018 God of War is basically the blueprint for the upcoming show. He told Collider that the world and story are just so full of cool stuff to work with. It’s an adaptation, so we’re not just copying things exactly, but really interpreting them for live-action. It’s been awesome being able to say, ‘Okay, let’s keep the core story and characters, and really build on that!’ There’s so much inspiration to pull from, it’s incredible.
The most recent God of War game, Ragnarok (released in 2022), concluded the series’ story set in Norse mythology. Because God of War is one of Sony’s biggest and most popular franchises, fans expect a new game to be announced eventually—it’s not a question of if, but when.
Beyond a new God of War game, developer Sony Santa Monica could be making a new IP.
