Glen Powell’s push for a Star Fox film got him cast as Fox in the Mario Galaxy Movie

When Fox McCloud showed up in Super Mario Galaxy, fans immediately started speculating about a Star Fox movie. Interestingly, Glen Powell had been hoping for a Star Fox film even before he was chosen for a role!

Glen Powell, who voiced Fox in the Super Mario Bros. Movie, has been a longtime fan of the original Super Mario Galaxy game and actively encouraged Nintendo to make a movie based on it.

Chris Meledandri, the head of Illumination, said that after the success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Justin Powell contacted him to pitch a Star Fox movie adaptation.

That incident is really what helped him get the role of Fox, and it could potentially lead to him starring in his own movie someday.

Glen Powell urged Illumination to make a Star Fox movie

In a conversation with Forbes, Chris Meledandri shared that actors started reaching out during the production of the first film, eager to be involved. After the movie wrapped, two actors specifically called to express strong interest in working with Nintendo, and Glen Powell was one of them.

Meledandri remembered Powell being a huge Star Fox enthusiast, especially fond of the character Fox McCloud.

I was so excited to hear that Chris Meledandri was talking to Shigeru Miyamoto – the actual creator of Mario! – about getting Fox from the Illumination universe into the Super Mario Bros. Movie. Apparently, Miyamoto-san loved the idea too when it was brought up, which is awesome! It would have been incredible to see that crossover.

We decided we wanted Star Fox to make a surprise appearance in the new movie after discussing it. I then called Glen and stressed that any conversations about it had to be kept completely confidential, as the character’s involvement was a secret. We felt Powell was ideal for the role.

It’s been quiet for the Star Fox series since Star Fox Zero on the Wii U wasn’t very popular, but recent leaks suggest a new game might come to the Switch 2 as soon as this year.

After Fox appeared in the Super Mario Bros. Movie, some fans predicted a large-scale Super Smash Bros. film similar to The Avengers. However, Shigeru Miyamoto has denied those rumors, despite earlier reports suggesting such a project was in development.

He explained that, unlike Super Smash Bros., he doesn’t believe all Nintendo characters would be included if a cinematic universe based on their properties were created.
