Glen Powell Gives Disappointing Update on Captain Planet Reboot

As a huge movie fan, I was really excited about the possibility of a Captain Planet reboot, and Glen Powell just gave us an update. Sadly, it doesn’t sound great. He’s confirmed that the reboot is no longer something he’s working on, and honestly, it’s pretty unclear what’s going to happen with the project now. It’s a bummer, but at least we have the answer!

Captain Planet reboot is not in Glen Powell’s hands anymore

While promoting his Hulu series Chad Powers in an interview with Screen Rant, Powell shared that a certain project is now out of his control. He stated, “That one’s no longer in my hands. Yeah, they’re going to take it and run with it, but yeah, I wish them the best on that one.” He further explained that despite being “passionate” about the idea since he was a child, difficulties with rights and many involved parties made developing it challenging.

Powell initially began working on a possible Captain Planet movie back in 2016. The idea was to create a film based on the popular 1990s cartoon series featuring a superhero dedicated to battling polluters and protecting the environment. As recently as 2023, Powell expressed his continued desire to bring the project to life. Leonardo DiCaprio was also involved as a producer for this adaptation. He clearly remained committed to seeing it completed.

In early 2025, Netflix revealed plans for a live-action Captain Planet series, with Leonardo DiCaprio as a producer. When questioned about the status of his script, Powell explained, “I’ve been a huge fan of Captain Planet since childhood. As is common in the entertainment industry, some projects move forward quickly while others don’t. This one involved multiple rights owners and many different opinions, so I’m no longer leading the development.”

As a huge fan, I was following the Captain Planet reboot closely, and it sounds like things have shifted. Powell made it clear he’s stepped away from directing a movie, but the franchise isn’t dead – it’s just evolving. From what I gather, the television series is definitely happening, while his big-screen vision is on hold. The fact that Leonardo DiCaprio was involved with *both* the movie that’s been shelved and the series that’s still in the works really shows that Captain Planet still has a strong presence in Hollywood, which is fantastic to see!

Currently, it seems very unlikely that Powell will be involved in future installments of the franchise, either by appearing in them or contributing as a writer.
