After a highly successful premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, the movie Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma received rave reviews and quickly became a major topic of conversation, even months before its general release. Now, following a perfect rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the official trailer for this unusual film has been released, giving audiences a first look at its intriguing story.
With a clever nod to 1980s slasher films, Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma focuses on the complex connection between an up-and-coming director and a legendary horror actor. They’re working together to bring back a famous slasher franchise, and the trailer suggests a film full of thrills, romance, and plenty of shocking moments. Mubi will release the movie in theaters on August 7, 2026, and you can watch a preview below.
Some Horror Stories Are Best Left in the Past
The horror movie Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma follows a young, eager director (Hannah Einbinder, from Hacks) tasked with reviving a struggling slasher franchise. When she seeks out the original film’s now-isolated and enigmatic star, they both become entangled in a terrifying world of obsession, dread, and madness.
Jane Schoenbrun, known for I Saw the TV Glow, wrote and directed the new movie Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma. The film features a cast including Einbinder, Anderson, Amanda Fix (from Orphan Black: Echoes), Arthur Conti (House of the Dragon), Eva Victor (Billions), Zach Cherry (Severance), Sarah Sherman (Saturday Night Live), Patrick Fischler (Mad Men), Dylan Baker (Spider-Man 2), Jasmin Savoy Brown (Scream), Quintessa Swindell (Black Adam), Kevin McDonald (The Kids in the Hall), and Jack Haven (I Saw the TV Glow).
As a huge horror fan, I immediately got a strong Friday the 13th vibe from the Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma trailer – it’s clearly a love letter to those classic 80s slashers. The summer camp setting feels spot-on, and they even threw in a really cool Easter egg for fans of the old Friday the 13th NES game! The director, Shoenbrun, has said he really wanted to pay tribute to what he calls the ‘Golden Age’ of horror, and honestly, it shows. It’s great to see a movie that so clearly appreciates those films.
Revisit the Golden Age of Horror With the New Movie
The filmmaker explained that they create the kinds of movies they loved as a child. Their film, Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma, is their most ambitious attempt to make a movie that feels like a classic, late-night sleepover watch – a wild but comforting horror film you’d stumble upon at a video store.
Schoenbrun expressed immense excitement about filming at sleepaway camp this summer with Hannah Einbinder, Gillian Anderson, and the teams at Mubi and Plan B. He jokingly suggested their decision to fund the movie would result in a chaotic and messy production, filled with ‘blood, guts, and various other fluids.’
Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma will be on Aug. 7, 2026.
