A large rat caused significant disruption on a KLM flight coming back from the Caribbean, leaving over 250 passengers stuck and unable to continue their journey.
A KLM flight traveling from Aruba to Amsterdam, with a stop in Bonaire, had to turn back when a rodent was discovered on board.
A video is circulating online showing a rat running through the inside of an airplane cabin. It was seen climbing on the curtain rails, jumping into overhead compartments, and even passengers’ bags, causing worry among those on board.
A KLM spokesperson told RTL News it remains unclear how the animal got onboard.
A rat was found on board the ship, which the spokesperson called an unfortunate experience for passengers.
Since the plane was flying over water, the pilot had to keep going as planned.
Despite the scare, KLM said the situation was kept under control.
The spokesperson said passengers stayed calm and staff carefully monitored the rat, which thankfully stayed away from the food.
Rat delays trips after plane mayhem
Once the plane arrived in Aruba, its scheduled return flight to Amsterdam was canceled.
KLM confirmed they canceled the return flight due to the need for a deep and thorough cleaning of the aircraft following a rat sighting.
I was so bummed to hear that our flight was cancelled! Apparently, over 250 of us – people trying to get back to Amsterdam or on to Bonaire – were affected. Luckily, the airline put us up in hotels for the night while they figured out how to get us on other flights. It was a hassle, but at least we weren’t stranded!
Some passengers described the delay as “frustrating and unpleasant.”
This isn’t the first time animals have caused problems with flights. Just this year, a snake on a Virgin Australia flight caused a delay and almost led to passengers having to leave the plane. Last year, a cargo plane flying from New York to Belgium had to return after a horse got loose inside during the flight.
The TSA is asking passengers to stop trying to bring animals through airport security, after an incident where a woman was found hiding turtles inside her bra.
