Giant bear finally removed from house after homeowner threatened lawsuit

After several unsuccessful attempts to remove it, a 550-pound black bear was finally removed from a California home. The homeowner had threatened to take legal action to ensure the bear was gone.

Most people have experienced finding an unwanted bug or creature inside their home at some point. While these little visitors – like spiders, flies, or other insects – can be a nuisance, they generally don’t stay for long.

Meanwhile, in California, a homeowner named Kenneth Johnson has been dealing with a 550-pound black bear living under his house since Thanksgiving. Despite attempts to encourage it to leave or relocate it, the bear has stayed put.

In late 2025, Johnson said he would sue the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, alleging they were negligent and caused him emotional distress because they didn’t remove a black bear. Fortunately, the situation has improved in 2026.

Viral bear finally removed from home after months of trying

KTLA news reported on January 8th that a large, 500-kilogram bear was successfully removed from under a man named Johnson’s house on January 6th, thanks to the BEAR League, a group dedicated to bear rescue.

The homeowner was relieved when the bear finally left from under their house, saying they were tired of the noises and smells. It only took the wildlife organization about 10 minutes to coax the bear out from underneath the home, according to KTLA.

Johnson was surprised by how quickly it happened. He said the team rushed in, quickly got behind the individual, and immediately subdued them.

The homeowner said the bear attempted to come back on January 8th, but was scared away by a new electric mat Johnson installed at the entrance.

A bear caused a gas line to rupture at Johnson’s property, resulting in significant damage. He stated, “There’s a lot of damage under there.”

It’s unclear whether the animal will try to come back or seek compensation for any harm done. But for now, the owner has successfully dealt with the problem.
