One More Level, the studio known for the game Ghostrunner, recently announced their new project, Valor Mortis – a challenging action game inspired by the ‘souls-like’ genre. While some people got a chance to try it at Gamescom in August, everyone will be able to play a demo next month.
Valor Mortis will be open for public testing from October 6th to 13th. Interested players can register on the game’s website. The test will let you play through the first chapter of an early version of the game, explore the world and story, and progress through up to 10 levels, culminating in a fight against a mini-boss. If you succeed, you’ll face a main boss to put your skills to the test. You’ll also get a preview of the game’s upgrade system.
During the game’s playtest, One More Level and Lyrical Games will host contests for the community, like speedrunning, screenshot submissions, and fan art creations. Participating players will have a chance to win prize packs when the game officially releases.
Valor Mortis shares similarities with the Dishonored games, offering first-person action within a historical setting. While inspired by the Napoleonic Wars of the 19th century, the game isn’t set on Earth. It takes place in a dark alternate reality where a substance called Nephtogolobin causes gruesome mutations in both the living and the dead.
The game lets you play as William, a soldier who once fought under Napoleon. He’s been brought back to life by a mysterious force called the Nephtogolobin, giving him the ability to resurrect repeatedly. He’ll need this power to survive, as he faces off against his old friends – now terrifying undead creatures.
I got to check out Valor Mortis earlier this year, and honestly, it looks really good! You can already add it to your Steam wishlist, and it’s coming to PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5 in 2026. I’m definitely keeping an eye on this one.
