Ghost of Yotei first reviews. It’s a very good sequel to Sony’s big hit, but it won’t convince Ghost of Tsushima skeptics

The highly anticipated game, Ghost of Yotei, will be released on PlayStation 5 in just one week. As the second game in the popular series by Sucker Punch, it’s generating a lot of excitement. The first game, Ghost of Tsushima, was a critical and commercial success when it launched in 2020, earning praise for its story and character, Jin Sakai, and receiving largely positive reviews (83% on Metacritic).

There’s a lot of anticipation for Sony’s upcoming exclusive title, and it comes with a hefty price tag of $69.99. Early reviews started appearing online yesterday, and they suggest the game is actually quite good, which should reassure anyone who was doubtful.

Currently, *Ghost of Yotei* has an average score of 87/100 on Metacritic, based on almost 100 reviews. This is comparable to the scores of the original game and its Director’s Cut – the PS5 version scored 87/100, and the PC version received an 89/100.

Reviewers especially loved the compelling story in *Ghost of Yotei*, which seamlessly blends into the game’s world. The game expertly incorporates elements of Japanese culture and classic samurai films.

Everyone’s really loving the beautiful Ezo region we get to explore throughout the game, and how it changes with the seasons. I especially appreciate that wandering off the beaten path and discovering things on my own feels natural and tied into the story. And if you were a fan of *Ghost of Tsushima*, you’re going to *love* the combat in *Ghost of Yotei* – it’s super similar, with those same intense fights and a great focus on developing your character.

However, some players found the main story became predictable over time, and the optional side missions felt repetitive and uninteresting – particularly those that relied heavily on the DualSense controller’s touchpad and motion controls. Several critics also thought the game’s world and story were too close to the first game and didn’t offer enough fresh content.

Ghost of Yotei does have a few bugs that might occasionally force you to reload a previous save, but these issues are relatively infrequent. The developers are planning an update when the game officially launches that may address these problems.

If you loved *Ghost of Tsushima*, you’ll likely be really excited about Sucker Punch’s new game. It’s very similar to the original, so if you weren’t a fan of the 2020 release, this one probably won’t change your mind.

Ghost of Yotei will be released on October 2nd on PS5.
