Ghost of Tsushima island’s rare wildcat is finally making a real life comeback

A remarkably rare animal in Japan is starting to recover, and surprisingly, it shares a link with the popular video game, Ghost of Tsushima.

The Tsushima leopard cat, a critically endangered wildcat found only on Tsushima Island in Japan, is starting to bounce back. A recent survey by Japan’s Ministry of the Environment, conducted from 2020 to 2024, shows the population is increasing.

As a big fan of these amazing Tsushima leopard cats, I was so excited to hear about how well they’re doing! They’ve been spotted in most of the areas surveyed on the island – 85 out of 105, which is incredible. There are thought to be around 90 to 100 of them living in the north, and even better, they’re starting to move further south! Experts believe this is all thanks to the work being done to protect them – things like controlling the deer population and managing the forests to create a safe home for them. It’s really encouraging to see these conservation efforts paying off.

Though they’re famously shy and active at night, many players of the game Ghost of Tsushima will recognize these adorable cats.

Critically endangered leopard cat population is on the rise

The Iki Island expansion for Ghost of Tsushima includes leopard cats, and similar to how they behave in real life, these cats will quickly run away from Jin if he gets too close.

Instead of battling, players charm these creatures by playing a flute. Successfully playing the right tune earns you a heartwarming reward – a few sweet moments of petting and stroking their soft fur, which is arguably the cutest interaction in the game!

Jin will gain a powerful new ability called Charm, letting him throw a deadly Kunai while performing stealth takedowns. This fits perfectly with his character as a secretive, elusive cat known for its stealth.

As a big fan of Ghost of Tsushima, I always loved the little details, especially the cats! It’s so cool how accurately they recreated leopard cats in the game – they really nailed the striped faces, round ears, and fluffy tails. And as a cat lover in general, I was thrilled to hear that these amazing, but sadly endangered, creatures are actually making a comeback in the wild. It’s just fantastic news all around!

As the population grows, the main focus now is ensuring this positive trend continues. Officials are still working on solutions to help people and the local cats live together peacefully.

There’s more good news from the animal world! Scientists have recently discovered a new species in caves located in Cambodia.
