The exciting heist thriller, Den of Thieves, which many consider to be underrated, is now streaming on Peacock.
The movie Den of Thieves, written, produced, and directed by Christian Gudegast, is now available for Peacock subscribers. Gerard Butler plays “Big Nick” O’Brien, a dedicated Los Angeles County Sheriff’s officer on a relentless mission to thwart a daring robbery of the Federal Reserve. The film also features a strong supporting cast including Pablo Schreiber, Curtis Jackson (50 Cent), O’Shea Jackson Jr., Evan Jones, Dawn Olivieri, Mo McRae, and Max Holloway.
In this story, Butler plays O’Brien, the head of a group called the Regulators. He clashes with Ray Merrimen (played by Schreiber), a former Marine with experience in MARSOC who has just gotten out of prison and leads a rival group, the Outlaws. The two groups come into conflict when Merrimen plans an extremely difficult robbery of the city’s Federal Reserve Bank.
Despite having a fast-paced story and a strong conflict between the characters played by Butler and Schreiber, the 2018 film Den of Thieves wasn’t a hit with critics. It currently has a low 42% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, based on over 135 reviews.
Reviewers described the film as a lively tribute to classic heist movies, but thought it didn’t quite reach the same level of quality. However, audiences generally liked it much more. On Rotten Tomatoes, over 5,000 viewers gave Den of Thieves a 63% rating, with many praising its fast-paced energy and exciting action.
Despite receiving mixed reviews, the film Den of Thieves performed well in theaters, earning over $80 million worldwide. This was a solid result given its $30 million production cost. However, it didn’t reach the number one spot, as it competed with popular releases like Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle.
Butler Returned for a 2025 Sequel to Den of Thieves
After the movie Den of Thieves did well in theaters, Gerard Butler reprised his role as Big Nick in a sequel last year. O’Shea Jackson Jr. also returned as Donnie Wilson, nicknamed “Jean-Jacques,” and the director and writer from the first film, Gudegast, was back as well. The new film is based on a real diamond heist that happened in Antwerp in 2003, and follows Butler’s character as he travels to Europe to stop the dangerous Panther mafia from pulling off another major theft.
While Pantera didn’t perform exceptionally well, earning mixed reviews and $58.4 million globally on a $30 million budget, Gerard Butler remained hopeful for the future. He and the writer, Gudegast, had even finished a script for a potential sequel, with ideas for two more films after that.
Den of Thieves is now available on Peacock.
