George R.R. Martin recently shared news about his TV franchise that will please viewers of the shows, but likely frustrate readers who are still waiting for him to finish the book series the shows are based on. He announced at the Iceland Noir festival last month that several new Game of Thrones shows are currently in development.
After the controversial ending of Game of Thrones, HBO began developing several potential spinoff shows. But one by one, those projects were cancelled, leaving only House of the Dragon. Now, with House of the Dragon preparing for its third season and a new spinoff, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, set to premiere next year, HBO seems ready to fully reinvest in the world of Westeros – both its past and its future. As author George R.R. Martin explained:
Besides “The Knight of the Seven Kingdoms” and “House of the Dragon,” we’re also working on several other “Game of Thrones” spinoffs. Most of these take place before the events of the original series, and there are around five or six in the works. I’m collaborating with other writers and creators on these projects, and we are also exploring some sequel ideas.
Several potential spin-off shows were previously considered, including an animated series focusing on Queen Nymeria, the empire of Yi Ti, and Corlys Velaryon. Other ideas included a sequel series centered on Jon Snow, a show set in Braavos that was ultimately cancelled, and even a possible movie. Now, with these new developments, it’s unclear if any of those earlier projects might be revived, or if we’re seeing a completely fresh slate of stories. One thing is certain, though: this news doesn’t mean that the next book in the series, The Winds of Winter, is any closer to being finished.
When Will ‘The Winds of Winter’ be Released?

HBO
Fans of George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire series are desperate to know when the next book will be released. Though the Game of Thrones TV show reached a conclusion – reportedly based on Martin’s planned storyline – readers won’t be satisfied until both The Winds of Winter and A Dream of Spring are published.
Martin’s recent statements indicate he’s currently focusing on projects other than finishing The Winds of Winter. He’s mentioned before that:
I’m aware people are frustrated about the delays with ‘The Winds of Winter,’ but I’ve always struggled with deadlines. I don’t like going back on my word or delivering work late. I do care about finishing ‘The Winds of Winter’ and I’m making progress, but I’m also enjoying working on other projects, like ‘The Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’ series.
Many fans are frustrated with George R.R. Martin’s slow progress on his novels, and the possibility of him ever starting A Dream of Spring seems increasingly unlikely. This frustration recently boiled over at an event, with one fan suggesting he hand the series over to another author. While some fans might be relieved by this news, it’s likely to fuel further debate and complaints online.
