George Clooney recently told the Daily Mail he’s taking a page from Paul Newman’s playbook. He explained, “I’m trying to go the route Paul Newman did — ‘Okay, well, I’m not kissing a girl anymore.’” While many news sources interpret this as Clooney stepping away from romantic leading roles, the way he put it is surprisingly detailed.

At 64, George Clooney hasn’t said what he’s looking for in future roles, specifically whether he’d be willing to share a kiss with someone closer to his own age, male or female. He did acknowledge that getting older is simply a part of life.
The Reality of Aging
George Clooney recently told the Daily Mail that turning 60 led him to a realization. He told his wife that while he still felt fit and could play basketball with much younger men, he understood that age is unavoidable. ‘No matter how healthy you are,’ he explained, ‘being 85 is a real milestone, and there’s no changing that.’
George Clooney, once famous for being a single and desirable man in Hollywood, married Amal Alamuddin in 2014 at the age of 53. Because he is 17 years older than her, the actresses he might consider for on-screen romantic scenes could be quite young or much closer to his wife’s age.
As a longtime movie fan, I’ve always enjoyed watching George Clooney’s chemistry with his leading ladies. He’s shared some fantastic on-screen romances over the years – I remember loving him with Michelle Pfeiffer in One Fine Day, and of course, Out of Sight with Jennifer Lopez was a classic. More recently, his pairing with Vera Farmiga in Up in the Air was brilliant, and now we have the delightful Ticket to Paradise with Julia Roberts – they’re just perfect together!

Putting the humor aside, George Clooney seems ready to let a new generation of actors take over leading romantic roles. He recently told 60 Minutes that, at 63, he’s no longer trying to compete with younger actors and doesn’t plan to make romantic films anymore, as reported by Variety.
With George Clooney seemingly stepping back from romantic leads, who will take his place in on-screen kisses? Glen Powell, a rising actor who works in various types of films, could be a good fit. However, it’s not necessarily that Clooney is too old for these roles, but rather that there are fewer of these kinds of mid-budget romantic movies being made these days.
If George Clooney chooses a similar path to Paul Newman as he ages, we can expect him to play more dignified, elder roles. Newman delivered incredibly strong performances later in his career, such as in The Verdict, and seemed to genuinely enjoy this phase of his work.
The Newman Route
Just before turning 70 in 1995, Newman spoke with The Spokesman-Review about aging and his career. He explained that he’d always associated stardom with youthfulness, and he felt his age was becoming a factor. He reasoned that if his success had relied on his youthful looks, producers would eventually have to acknowledge that he was getting older.

Clooney appears to be embracing his age in his roles. His latest film, Jay Kelly, features him playing an actor looking back on his life and work. It doesn’t really matter if he continues to play romantic leads or not. Audiences will always be drawn to stories about young love.
