George Clooney is famous as a versatile actor, but he’s also a notorious prankster. He’s pulled jokes on many celebrities, including Matt Damon. One memorable prank involved Clooney and Brad Pitt running a fake campaign to name Damon ‘Sexiest Man Alive,’ complete with full-page magazine ads of him in a Speedo. But Damon recently shared another hilarious prank Clooney played on him.
In a recent interview with Variety, Matt Damon revealed a playful prank George Clooney pulled on him during the filming of their 2014 movie, The Monuments Men (which Clooney also directed). Damon said Clooney secretly instructed the costume department to subtly take in his costumes – by just an eighth of an inch – each day.
I was in my early forties and starting to feel self-conscious about getting older. He enjoyed teasing me about it. Years later, after finishing another film, I tried on a suit that didn’t fit, and my immediate thought was that he’d been playing a prank on me again.
George Clooney played a long-term prank on Matt Damon during the filming of The Monuments Men. Instead of giving Damon a costume that was immediately too small, Clooney had the costume subtly altered to become tighter and tighter over time. It’s a remarkably elaborate and drawn-out joke that continued even after filming wrapped! I’m impressed he managed to plan this while also directing such a large cast, including Bill Murray, John Goodman, and Cate Blanchett.
While George Clooney’s ‘Sexist Man Alive’ prank might be his most famous involving Matt Damon, this story about resizing Damon’s wardrobe is still incredibly funny. But let’s not forget when Clooney involved Damon in a playful revenge scheme targeting Tina Fey and Amy Poehler. After the two hosts joked about Clooney and Damon at the 2014 Golden Globes, Clooney secretly had stationery printed with Matt Damon’s name on it. He then wrote a letter pretending to be Damon, expressing his annoyance at the jokes. This is easily my favorite prank of the three – the fact that Clooney didn’t even tell Damon what he was doing makes it even better!
As I said before, George Clooney has played pranks on many other Hollywood stars. His rivalry with Brad Pitt is particularly famous – it started when Clooney put a silly bumper sticker on Pitt’s car while they were filming Ocean’s Eleven. Matt Damon also shared recently that Clooney’s antics during the making of Ocean’s Twelve made Pitt incredibly angry – Damon said it was the angriest he’d ever seen him.
I’m already getting excited about the potential for some classic on-set pranks now that George Clooney is supposedly teaming up with Brad Pitt and Matt Damon for Ocean’s Fourteen!
