George and Amal Clooney Granted French Citizenship

George Clooney has repeatedly expressed his unhappiness with the direction of the United States under Donald Trump, and it appears he’s taking steps to move abroad. Clooney and his wife, Amal, have been granted French citizenship. With a home already established in France where they spend considerable time, it’s likely they will make the country their permanent home.

George Clooney has often talked about his fondness for France, especially its strong privacy protections, and has said it’s a great environment for raising a family. In an interview with Esquire magazine, Clooney explained:

We feel incredibly fortunate. I grew up on a farm and didn’t enjoy it as a child, but now I see it offered a much better upbringing. I was concerned about raising our kids in Los Angeles, with the influence of Hollywood. I wanted them to have a normal life, and France offers that – people there aren’t focused on fame. I don’t want my children worrying about being photographed by paparazzi or constantly being compared to other celebrity kids.

George and Amal Clooney own homes in several countries – France, the U.S., Mexico, England, and Italy – in addition to their primary residence in Brignoles, France. However, they plan to spend more time in France going forward, and their Los Angeles home will likely serve as George’s home base when he’s working on projects in the United States.

George Clooney Joins Many Stars Finding Life Better Away from America

Many celebrities have chosen to live outside the United States for a variety of reasons. These include political concerns, increasing violence, and a desire to escape constant, often negative, media attention and invasions of privacy.

Following a period of public criticism, Ellen DeGeneres and her wife, Portia de Rossi, relocated to the U.K. in 2024. Meanwhile, Rosie O’Donnell moved to Ireland earlier this year, saying she’d only come back to the U.S. if everyone in America had equal rights and felt safe.

As a film fan, I’ve noticed a real trend lately – so many actors, like Lily Collins, Fisher Stevens, Eva Longoria, Pamela Anderson, and even Amber Heard, have been moving away from the US. It seems like a lot of them are looking for a place where they can truly relax, have some privacy, and most importantly, feel safe – and it’s easy to see why with everything going on.

Although George Clooney hasn’t publicly confirmed it, reports in the French media suggest he’s become a French citizen, likely to provide a secure environment for his family. His newest film, Jay Kelly, is now available to watch on Netflix.
