Wildlight Entertainment, the company that created Highguard, has reportedly laid off the majority of its employees. This likely means development on Highguard is ending, a situation many players anticipated after the game first came out.
Highguard made a big splash when it was first revealed at The Game Awards 2025. After the initial excitement, however, there was a long period of no news, leading some to worry the game might be cancelled. Fortunately, on January 26th, Highguard was released on PC and consoles as a free-to-play game, making it accessible to everyone.
Despite positive early impressions of Highguard, the game hasn’t attracted many players. Recent LinkedIn posts from members of the Highguard development team, as shared by Shinobi602 on Twitter, suggest layoffs and that work on the game has been stopped.
What’s Next For Highguard?
When a live-service game loses most of its staff, particularly shortly after release, it’s usually a worrying sign. We’ve seen this happen before – the game Concord was canceled after a similar situation, and recently, the team behind 2XKO reduced its size, hinting that the game might be discontinued soon.
Despite a lot of initial hype for Highguard – sparked by The Game Awards and then fueled by various controversies – the game struggled to retain players and generate revenue.
When a live-service game fires most of its team, particularly right after it comes out, it’s usually a really worrying sign.
Ultimately, a game’s success depends on how enjoyable it is to play. Highguard had a lot going for it compared to many other games released on Steam, but it simply failed to capture players’ interest. If it had been as engaging as a game like ARC Raiders, keeping people hooked and returning daily, it might have had a chance.
What does the future hold for Highguard? Could it potentially be revived like a game such as Final Fantasy XIV? It increasingly appears that this might be the end of the road for Highguard, suggesting there’s a limit to how much even positive or negative attention can help a game that relies on ongoing updates and player engagement.
