While many have applauded the extensive tribute to those we’ve lost at the 2026 Oscars, Geoff Keighley, creator of The Game Awards, has expressed disappointment that his late father was not included in the segment.
The 98th Academy Awards included a tribute to film industry professionals who passed away in the past year. Honorees included Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner, Diane Keaton, Catherine O’Hara, Robert Duvall, Diane Ladd, and Robert Redford.
The show featured an unusually long segment that culminated in Barbra Streisand singing ‘The Way We Were’ as a heartfelt tribute to Robert Redford, which deeply moved many watching at home.
However, a significant person was absent from the video collection: David Keighley, a producer highly respected as a pioneer of the IMAX experience.
Geoff Keighley calls out Oscars omission
David Keighley passed away in August 2025. After the funeral, his son, Geoff Keighley, shared on X (formerly Twitter) that he was upset his father wasn’t included in the Oscars’ memorial segment.
I’m deeply saddened and upset that the Oscars broadcast didn’t acknowledge my father, David Keighley, and his significant impact on IMAX and the film industry during the In Memoriam segment. This is something I won’t forget.

I was really bummed and honestly heartbroken that the Oscars didn’t mention my dad, David Keighley, during the In Memoriam segment. He did so much for IMAX and for movies in general, and it just felt like a huge oversight. It’s something I’ll never forget.
Geoff has gotten a lot of positive feedback online, including one comment saying, “We’ll keep his memory alive for you – ignore those arrogant people.”
People expressed their condolences to Geoff, saying they were deeply sorry for his loss and couldn’t imagine how difficult it must be. One person also mentioned being shocked that the deceased wasn’t present, and offered their sympathy.
Man, the ‘In Memoriam’ segment at the Oscars this year really got to me. It’s just… we’re losing people we’ve always known and loved, even those who seemed like they’d be around forever. It felt different this year, somehow.

One person expressed sympathy, calling the situation “absolutely ridiculous.” Another was surprised he wasn’t included on the list, but felt the omission showed a lack of respect for the traditional way most people watch movies.
David Keighley, the first chief quality officer at IMAX, played a key role in defining the IMAX experience for movies. He worked closely with directors like Christopher Nolan and James Cameron to ensure IMAX films maintained high quality and that the technology functioned at its best.
