The 1990s gave us a lot of great movies – from thrillers and romantic comedies to horror – but it really stood out when it came to action films. The decade was full of big-budget, effects-driven blockbusters featuring famous actors who created iconic characters we still talk about today. Arnold Schwarzenegger reached new heights with Terminator 2: Judgment Day, and actors like Keanu Reeves discovered a type of role that continues to define their careers.
It’s hard to think of a more iconic ’90s action movie than John Woo’s Face/Off. The film, starring Nicolas Cage and John Travolta, was incredibly over-the-top, with a wild story, huge action sequences, and memorable lines. While some see it as a delightfully cheesy classic, beneath the surface lies a genuinely great action movie that still holds up today.
I still remember when Face/Off came out in ’97 – it was massive. People loved it, and it made over $245 million at the box office, really solidifying Nicolas Cage and John Travolta as action stars. It even got an Oscar nod for its sound effects, and critics were genuinely impressed. Looking back, it’s still incredibly well-regarded; it currently has a 93% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and it stands as the highest-rated action film in both Cage and Travolta’s filmographies.
‘Face/Off’ Calls for Suspension of Disbelief (But It’s Worth It)
Face/Off is a truly unique action movie. It’s both exciting and humorous, and all it asks of the audience is to relax and enjoy the thrilling ride. You do have to accept its incredibly far-fetched story, but if you can, it’s a genuinely gripping experience.
The film centers on Sean Archer (played by Travolta), an FBI agent driven by a desire to avenge his son’s murder. After criminal mastermind Castor Troy tried to kill Archer, he tragically killed Archer’s son, Michael. Archer finally captures Troy in a meticulously planned operation, believing he’s achieved justice.
This isn’t over yet. Just before falling into a coma, Troy warns them about a future bomb threat. Archer can’t get any more details from Troy’s brother, Pollux, so he’s forced to take on an incredibly risky assignment: he needs to get Troy’s face surgically attached to his own, impersonate the dangerous criminal Troy, and gather enough information from Pollux to prevent the bombing. It’s supposed to be simple, but it definitely won’t be.
The trouble begins when Castor Troy recovers from the surgery and compels doctors to give him Archer’s face. He then eliminates anyone who knows both men’s true identities and sets out to exact revenge, determined to permanently live as Archer.
An Action Visionary at His Best

The film was crucial in launching its two stars into the mainstream, particularly in action movies. Travolta was already gaining momentum after the success of Pulp Fiction, and Broken Arrow had further boosted his profile before Face/Off. Meanwhile, Cage was coming off a hit with The Rock and an Academy Award win for Leaving Las Vegas. Face/Off solidified their reputations as leading men capable of handling big-budget action films.
Although Face/Off is remembered for launching John Travolta and Nicolas Cage to new heights, it also significantly raised John Woo’s profile in Hollywood. While Hard Target and Broken Arrow were decent films, Face/Off was Woo’s biggest hit yet. The movie quickly became a fan favorite in the action genre, opening doors for the Hong Kong director – already famous for films like The Killer and Hard Boiled – to direct major studio productions such as Mission: Impossible 2 and Windtalkers.
While he didn’t achieve the same success after Face/Off, the film was incredibly important in defining his action style: intense, violent, but surprisingly controlled. Even nearly 30 years later, Face/Off stands out as a truly original action movie, and a clear example of the work of a director who doesn’t get enough credit. If you’re curious to see what makes him special, check out Face/Off when it becomes available on Peacock on April 1st.
