„Gen Z loves AI slop.” Ex-Square Enix CEO believes the huge success of ARC Raiders is the best proof of that

Many gamers dislike these approaches, arguing they don’t lower game prices, but simply reduce game quality. Meanwhile, industry leaders are focused on the potential of AI to cut development costs. A recent example is Jacob Navok, formerly a five-year leader at Square Enix, who now heads Genvid Technologies.

  1. In a post on X, he stated that players complaining about the use of gen AI are a minority – the majority of consumers have no issue with it. To back up his point, Navok mentions the success of ARC Raiders.
  2. Navok believes that players from Gen Z and younger fully embrace generative AI, as demonstrated by the success of the Steal a Brainrot module available in Roblox, which is filled with characters from poorly created AI designs. As he said:

Okay, so as a gamer, I’m seeing everyone talk about ‘AI slop’ and Gen Z is totally embracing it – they don’t even seem to care that it’s, well, ‘slop’! It’s become this whole thing where they’re jokingly comparing themselves to Bane from The Dark Knight Rises, like they grew up with this kind of content. Basically, it’s a meme about being totally immersed in AI-generated stuff from the start – they didn’t just discover it, they were raised on it!

Jacob Navok believes AI is already common throughout the game industry. Even if developers aren’t directly using it for things like creating art or sound, it’s likely being used in the game code itself, particularly with models like Claude.

Navok points out that many independent developers actually prefer not to use AI, even for writing code. He also finds it illogical that some people are okay with AI-generated code, but object to AI-created images or music.

Jacob Navok believes the positive reception of ARC Raiders, combined with Activision’s experimentation with generative AI, signals that the gaming industry will increasingly embrace this technology. He thinks there’s no turning back now.
