This week at CES, Nvidia unveiled its latest line of graphics cards, the GeForce RTX 50-series. The new series includes four GPUs: the GeForce RTX 5090, 5080, 5070, and 5070 Ti.
The main model, the RTX 5090, retails for $2,000 and Nvidia states it has double the power of the RTX 4090. However, this new powerhouse needs a 1000-watt power supply, quite a jump from the RTX 4090’s initial 450W power consumption. Surprisingly, despite its increased power requirements, the RTX 5090 is more space-efficient than its predecessor, making it suitable for smaller PC constructions.
All cards within this range boast a sleeker design and enhanced functionality, as stated by Nvidia. The RTX 5080 priced at $1,000 is claimed to be twice as swift as the RTX 4080. On the more affordable side, the RTX 5070, costing $550, delivers performance equivalent to that of the RTX 4090, nearly a third of its price. The 5070 Ti, priced at $750, offers a balance between the two in terms of both cost and performance.
Instead of solely relying on raw processing power, the new 50-series cards utilize Nvidia’s advanced machine learning technology such as RTX Neural Shaders and the latest DLSS 4 upscaling. This innovation not only amplifies lower-resolution gameplay to 1440p or 4K resolutions, but also incorporates Multi Frame Generation. According to Nvidia, this feature can generate up to three additional frames for each frame of gameplay that is rendered. In essence, it enhances gaming visuals by mimicking the smoothing effect found in movies and TVs, giving an impression of higher, more fluid frame rates without the hardware actually producing all the frames.
Although the 50-series GPUs might have a slightly lower increase in raw processing power when not aided by AI technology, implying that the 5070 has less processing power than the 4090 for example, this also means that these GPUs are smaller and more cost-effective compared to their previous generation counterparts. This is because they don’t require as much computational horsepower to deliver high-end results.
As a gamer, I understand the trade-offs between AI upscaling and frame generation compared to traditional hardware rendering. These machine learning technologies might match the raw performance of hardware, but the problem lies in the quality of that performance. Upscalers like DLSS, AMD’s FSR, and Sony’s PSSR on PS5 Pro can sometimes be inconsistent, or even incorrect in extreme cases. Frame generation, on the other hand, can introduce noticeable input delay, which is exactly what playing at high frame rates is supposed to minimize, not increase.
It’s important to note that Nvidia, along with game developers, are conscious of these matters and are actively trying to resolve them. In fact, several games have already leveraged these features effectively. The new 40-series cards employed DLSS technology to significantly outperform the 30-series, albeit at a high cost. If the upcoming generation of this tech performs as expected, the 5090 could deliver another significant performance increase, while mid-range RTX 50 GPUs might offer an economical choice for enjoying 4K resolution gaming and high FPS without breaking the bank.

Although preorders aren’t open yet, you can now find listings for these GPUs at Best Buy, with an option to receive notifications when they become available for purchase. Keep in mind that the listed items are for Nvidia’s standard card versions; it’s anticipated that non-Nvidia 50-series GPUs will be released shortly following the launch of these models. Additionally, Nvidia has announced that RTX 50-series laptop GPUs are under development, with the initial models set to debut in March.
