As a film critic with a heart full of empathy and a mind open to diverse stories, I find myself intrigued by the upcoming debut feature “In Ashes” by Ludvig Christian Næsted Poulsen. The story’s focus on a young gay man navigating modern dating and digital hook-up culture resonates deeply with my own experiences of seeking connections in a bustling cityscape, albeit from a different perspective.
The Berlin-based sales representative, M-Appeal, has obtained worldwide distribution rights for “In Ashes,” the initial full-length movie by Danish director Ludvig Christian Næsted Poulsen, which is scheduled to debut next year.
The movie chronicles the story of Christian, a young, gay man in his twenties, as he navigates healing from the pain of his first romantic breakup. In search of genuine connections via dating apps, he embarks on an exhilarating series of encounters, marked by passion and fixation, all while seeking a fresh start in love and self-discovery.
I aimed to illustrate the challenges of growing up amidst a tumultuous, passionate, and progressively liberal setting,” I shared with EbMaster.
As a passionate cinephile, I’d say this: “This movie presents a unique perspective on contemporary dating and online hookups within the LGBTQ+ community, delving into the conflict between fleeting sexual encounters and the yearning for genuine emotional bonding. The film manages to cater to both desires with a dash of sharp wit, making it resonate strongly with many in our community.” Maren Kroymann from M-Appeal mentioned this.
Ashes” was created by Mette Mikkelsen, Jakob Meier, and Jonathan Langelund from New Tales, and co-produced by Julius Plambech from Los Film.
Anton Underbjerg serves as the cinematographer, while Liv Forbæk Svane takes on the role of the production designer. The editing team consists of Ludvig Christian Næsted Poulsen, Josefine Hald, and Jarivan Ahmad.
The movie is funded by Aarhus Film Workshop, the West Danish Film Fund, Tuborg Foundation, Struer Municipality, Spar Nord Bank, Actors’ Union, Danish Film Directors and Production Resource Denmark.
Næsted Poulsen’s previous credits include short drama “Boy’s Dream.”
Among the other movies M-Appeal plans to release are “Gloria’s Urban Journey,” “Amour,” “Vera and the Joys of Others,” and “Happy Conclusions.
