2024 proved to be a tough year for video game hardware, as per the recent data shared by Circana. This data reveals that the overall spending on PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch devices in the United States decreased significantly, amounting to $4.9 billion – a drop of 25% compared to the previous year’s spending of $6.45 billion.
In December 2024, the expenditure on new video game hardware decreased significantly, amounting to approximately $1.1 billion, which represents a 29% drop compared to previous years. Notably, PlayStation 5 hardware sales saw a decrease of 18%, while both Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch sales experienced a steeper decline of 38%.
A significant decrease in video game hardware purchases is anticipated, especially since the peak sales periods for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and the maturity of Nintendo Switch in the market have passed. Mat Piscatella from Circana stated this, but noted that the drop-off was larger than he had predicted.
In December 2024, the PlayStation 5 (PS5) was the top-selling console platform in both units and dollars, with the Nintendo Switch trailing in second place. For the entire year of 2024, the PS5 dominated in terms of both unit and dollar sales. The Xbox Series X|S ranked second in dollar sales, while the Nintendo Switch finished as runner-up for unit sales.
It’s worth mentioning that approximately half (49%) of the PS5 consoles and around four-fifths (43%) of the Xbox Series X|S devices sold in December 2024 did not come with a disc drive. In the year 2024 as a whole, about 45% of the PlayStation 5 units sold were digital-only, and around 44% of all Xbox Series X|S consoles were also digital-only devices.
Another point worth noting is that, despite the PS5 having sold 7% more units than the PS4 during the same time frame after its initial 50 months on sale, the Xbox Series X|S has experienced a 18% decrease in sales compared to the Xbox One.
One notable figure is that the PlayStation 5 (PS5) ranks third among all-time best-selling consoles in the United States when considering revenue, surpassed only by the Nintendo Switch and Xbox 360. In terms of units sold, PS5 sits at the eleventh position in the US gaming history.
As a gaming enthusiast, I’m super excited about the upcoming releases! In 2025, Nintendo will unveil the Nintendo Switch 2, which I can’t wait to invest in for an enhanced gaming experience this year. Meanwhile, Microsoft is reportedly working on a brand-new Xbox console and a portable Xbox device. And the buzz is that Sony might be cooking up the PS6! What an exciting time for gamers like us!
2024 saw Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 as the top-selling video game in the United States for that year, leading all other titles in sales.
