As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of experience under my belt, I have to say that this year’s Steam Awards have left me utterly amazed and impressed. The winners truly reflect the diverse tastes and preferences of the gaming community, and it’s fascinating to see how the votes were cast by players themselves.
The crowning achievement has to be Black Myth: Wukong taking home the Game of the Year Award, as well as Best Storyline and the Best Game You Suck At Award. I’ve been following this game since its inception, and it’s been an absolute joy watching it grow into the epic masterpiece that it is today. The game’s deep roots in Chinese culture resonated with gamers around the world, and it’s not surprising that it became the best-selling title on Steam last year.
I was also thrilled to see Helldivers 2 winning the Best Multiplayer Game category. I’ve been a fan of the series since its inception, and I can’t wait to see what the Polish studio has in store for us next. The Visual Style Award went to Silent Hill 2, a game that holds a special place in my heart, and it was great to see it recognized for its unique aesthetic.
The most surprising outcome for me was Liar’s Bar winning the Most Innovative Gameplay Award. I had initially pegged Balatro as the clear winner, but Liar’s Bar proved to be a worthy contender that has definitely caught my attention. The rest of the awards were well-deserved, and it’s always exciting to see new games like Satisfactory and S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl getting the recognition they deserve.
One thing that never fails to amuse me about these awards is the Best Soundtrack Award, which this year went to Red Dead Redemption. I can’t help but chuckle at how the gaming industry has evolved over the years, from simple 8-bit tunes to full-blown soundtracks that rival those of Hollywood movies. It just goes to show that video games have come a long way, and I can’t wait to see what the future holds for this incredible medium.
In 2024, the Steam Awards, we discovered the ultimate victors. Notably, Black Myth: Wukong stood out with multiple accolades, including being crowned as the top game of the year, boasting an exceptional narrative that won it the best storyline award, and even snatching the “Best Game You Can’t Master” prize.
The achievement isn’t unexpected since the accolades are determined by the votes of the players themselves, making this title the top-selling game on Steam last year. Moreover, the game is richly immersed in Chinese culture, and Steam users from China are particularly proud of its accomplishments.
Additionally, it didn’t come as a shock that the top multiplayer game went to Helldivers 2, as it clearly outshone others. The Polish studio Bloober Team was thrilled to receive the award for the best visual design with Silent Hill 2. However, the biggest surprise was the recipient of the “Most Innovative Gameplay Award,” which unexpectedly went to Liar’s Bar instead of Balatro, a game that had been widely anticipated to win.
