As a seasoned gamer with memories of playing Baldur’s Gate 3 etched deep into my gaming DNA, I can’t help but feel a tad nostalgic as I ponder the shifting dynamics of our beloved industry. Over the years, I’ve witnessed the meteoric rise of streamers and their colossal fanbases, and now, it seems they have managed to captivate more hours from our gaming lives than we can spare.
Over the past ten years, streaming platforms have grown in influence within the gaming world, with some even amassing large fan bases. Interestingly, a recent study indicates that gamers are now spending more hours watching gaming content than they do playing the games themselves. This trend could potentially provide video game developers with a new avenue to generate income from dedicated fans.
A study by Midia Research reveals how much people of different age groups spend on gaming activities each week. The survey, carried out in Q2 2024, included responses from gamers across the US, UK, Australia, Canada, Germany, France, Sweden, South Korea, and Brazil. As per the report, players typically invest around 16 hours weekly on their hobby, with 7.4 hours spent directly playing games, while the rest (approximately 8.5 hours) is dedicated to watching gaming-related videos on platforms like Twitch, YouTube, and social media sites.
The report proposes an idea: Video game companies could benefit from developing their own video platforms for gamers to share content related to games. This overlooked opportunity, referred to as “the potential for game developers to incorporate video content within their own environments,” has the possibility to attract advertising and sponsorships that are now directed towards other channels. Most significantly, it would provide publishers with a means of communicating directly with their most passionate customers who make in-game purchases.
Although these suggestions seem beneficial, publishers might face a challenge in implementing them. The reason being, platforms like YouTube, Twitch, and others already hold a significant portion of the gaming audience. It could prove difficult to persuade fans to leave their current open environment for a system exclusive to one publisher, as it may not offer the same level of freedom and variety that they currently enjoy.
