Microsoft is increasing the price of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, jumping from $20 to $30 each month – a 50% increase. However, the price won’t be going up everywhere. GameStop has stated that it will continue to offer Game Pass Ultimate at the current price for both in-store and online purchases, at least for now.
The retailer is still offering one-month Game Pass Ultimate memberships for $20 and three-month memberships for $60. This seems to be a limited-time deal, so it probably won’t be available indefinitely – you might want to purchase it soon before the price goes up. If you’re a GameStop Pro member (which costs $25 per year), the price drops to $19 for a single month or $57 for a three-month subscription.
In addition to GameStop, major retailer Amazon still offers Game Pass Ultimate for $20 per month or $60 for a three-month subscription. Walmart, Target, and Best Buy are also continuing to sell it at these prices.
You can currently find Game Pass Ultimate for $20 or less at several other online stores for a single month, so it’s worth comparing prices before you subscribe at the new, increased rate.
The news of another price increase for Microsoft’s Game Pass Ultimate received a lot of criticism online. This price increase came after Microsoft also raised the prices of its consoles, as well.
It was anticipated that prices would eventually rise, as is common with subscription services. They often start with low introductory prices to attract users, and then increase them as the company aims to profit from its subscriber base. However, the 50% price increase for Game Pass Ultimate was higher than many predicted, even considering the recent additions like Fortnite Crew and Ubisoft+ Classics.
The price of PC Game Pass is increasing, going from $12 per month to $16.50 per month. However, you can still find prepaid codes for the lower price on Amazon, just like with Ultimate. Game Pass Core and Game Pass Standard are being renamed to Game Pass Essential ($10/month) and Game Pass Premium ($15/month), respectively, and those tiers will not increase in price.
According to one industry expert, Microsoft might introduce a cheaper Game Pass option that includes advertisements to attract a wider audience. Game Pass is already a significant revenue source for Microsoft, recently surpassing $5 billion in yearly earnings for the first time.
