On a historic day, Thor “The Mountain” Björnsson smashed his own deadlift world record and subsequently emerged victorious in the entire Strongman Competition held in Birmingham.
The Icelandic man, aged 35 years, is widely recognized by many as Gregor Clegane in the popular series Game of Thrones. Beyond his on-screen fame, he’s also recognized as one of history’s most accomplished strongmen. Just recently, this extraordinary individual broke the prior deadlift record with a breath-taking lift of 505 kilograms (equivalent to 1,113 pounds), solidifying himself among the world’s strongest living individuals.
Björnsson has consistently reigned supreme in the Strongman field, accumulating numerous podium placements and several international championships, including being crowned 2018’s World’s Strongest Man. The Birmingham competition served as another platform for demonstrating his unmatched skills; yet again, he proved to be in a class of his own.
Strongest man in the world, once again
At Strongman 2025, I confidently stepped onto the platform and effortlessly hoisted 1,124 pounds (that’s 510 kilograms for some) from the floor, leaving my past record at Eisenhart Black Competition in Germany behind me. But what truly left fans breathless was how casually I made it seem like a piece of cake!
In his YouTube video blog, he made clear that the elevator incident didn’t represent the extent of his strength. Instead, it was a deliberate decision he had made.
In his Strongman vlog, Thor clarified that many have been curious about whether he’d choose something heavier if 510 were considered light. However, he emphasized that he won’t opt for anything heavier due to the need to perform throughout the entire show. He aims to win the competition, with numerous talented athletes participating today.
After such an immense lift, he noted that your nervous system might become slightly fatigued, which could potentially jeopardize his chances of winning later in the day if he continued to push harder. However, Thor maintained his concentration, persevered throughout the competition, and ultimately emerged victorious. He not only set a new world record but also claimed the Strongman title in just one afternoon.
