Be warned: This article reveals significant spoilers for episode 3 of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, titled “The Squire,” and may spoil future seasons. The new Game of Thrones prequel series has seemingly given a clue about the sad fate of the original show’s main characters, hinting at what happens to them years later.
The series A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms centers on Dunk (Peter Claffey), a wandering knight, and his young squire, Egg (Dexter Sol Ansell). Dunk initially thinks Egg is an orphan, but a major reveal in episode 3 shows that Egg is actually a grandson of the king. This discovery adds a new layer of meaning to a scene that happened earlier in the episode, as Egg’s true identity makes it much more important.
Before the big reveal, Dunk and Egg meet a fortune teller named Jenna Boyd. She predicts Dunk will become a famous and rich knight, and Egg will one day be king, but will also die in a fire. Egg is disturbed by this prediction, while Dunk dismisses it as ridiculous. Later in life, Egg’s prediction comes true – he does become king after several family members pass away.
King Aegon V, also known as Egg, died in a fire at Summerhall fifty years after the tourney at Ashford, along with many at court. According to a comment in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms reported by Decider, the fire was supposedly caused by King Aegon attempting to hatch dragon eggs. Writers Peter Claffer and Dexter Sol Ansell were already familiar with this backstory.
“I’m not going to discuss Peter,” Ansell began, but then started talking about the fire at Summerhall and Egg’s attempts to create dragons there. He referenced information from George, but Claffey quickly interrupted, stating, “We don’t actually know if that’s what really happened.” Claffey then made a throat-slitting gesture as Ansell continued to speak, seemingly signaling him to stop.
Ansell stated, “We know Dunk lives, but we don’t know about Egg.” It’s uncertain whether Ansell misremembered this information, made an assumption based on the fortune teller’s statements (who didn’t predict Dunk’s death), or accidentally revealed a major plot point. According to author George R.R. Martin’s established story, both Egg and Dunk, along with Egg’s oldest son Duncan, ultimately died.
“We really don’t know what’s going on,” Claffey admitted. “But let’s just finish this first season and then we’ll figure things out.” Dunk and Egg have more pressing concerns than what might happen to them in the distant future. Right now, Dunk is dealing with the fallout from a fight with Egg’s harsh brother, Aerion (Finn Bennett), at a tournament he wasn’t quite ready for.
The show A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms has been picked up for a second season. Showrunner Ira Parker has also shared plans for the series to potentially run for 12 to 15 seasons, following the characters’ stories all the way to their conclusion. However, as noted by Claffey, season one is still ongoing. While A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms has gotten off to a good start with positive reviews and viewership, this long-term plan is still a ways off.
I’m so excited – A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is now streaming on HBO Max! New episodes come out every Sunday at 10 p.m. Eastern, right on HBO and HBO Max. And great news – episode 4 is dropping early, on Friday, February 6th at 12:01 a.m. Pacific/3:01 a.m. Eastern, so it doesn’t clash with the Super Bowl.
